Either the AMC 232 i6 or the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is definitely durable - any of the AMC motors is durable. AMC may have kinda' hosed themselves making 'em SO durable; they sold less replacement parts & rebuild kits than anyone else because of it.
A AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l will buy ya more power than the AMC 232 i6 , although not a huge lot - about 10%. You can pretty much count on getting the BEST gas mileage out of the 1-barrel carburetor, even if a 2-barrel would get you more power.
The AMC 232 i6 and the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l use almost 100% the same parts; there are differences in the connecting rods & crankshaft (they have the same size bore, which they also share with the older 199, but different stroke), but otherwise they're nearly identical.
