304 to 360

All external items, drive accessories, exhaust, intake, valve coves, water pump, pulleys and more will exchange. You have to be careful if your swapping internal parts, pistons will not but most every thing else will. AMC 304 heads have smaller vales so swapping the heads wouldn't be beneficial. The blocks are not interchangeable without machine work.

My AMC 304 was old and tired so I dropped a freshly built Wagoneer '82 360 in my CJ5 . The motor mounts from the Wagoneer (motor side) needed to be changed to the AMC 304 mounts .... Darn I can't quite remember now .... I might have needed to use the Wagoneer mounts .... Can't quite remember now. Keep the Wagoneer motor side mounts, you might need them. The headers mounted right up with no changes.

Sorry I've been neck deep in work.

Thanks for the input. I may have found a new source for some engines. The current 360 I'm looking at I can't get a straight answer to my questions. So that kind of sends up red flags. I will have to check tgis new source out next week. He is advertising 360, 390 and 401's for sale. Just will depend on price.

I want a long block assembly anyways. But I'll keep the mounts in mind and good info on the heads as that did cross my mind. I think this current 360 I am looking at is a short block, but the guy just won't come out and say it. I'll just keep looking.

I would'nt be real concerned about an engine swap, but I am wanting to build an off road trailer down the road and I will probably need the extra power especially with mountain driving.

HH, your correct the CJ AMC 304 motor mounts need to be swapped to the 360 motor to be installed in a CJ.

Something funky happened with the motor mounts. Logically I would have swapped the AMC 304 mounts to the 360, but I remember dropping the engine in and the mounts didn't fit so I changed'em. Then everything went perfectly. I just don't quite remember. There is a small part of my memory that says I thought "What the heck, lets give the Wagoneer mounts a shot." I know it only took a few minute to swap'em.

Remove the AMC 304 engine mounts
Install them on the 360 engine

Sorry, I'm just ramblin'. Do as Posi and CJ are telling you. The 360 will drop right in.

Ok, got it. If when the swap happens, going with new poly mounts. One of the stock mounts now has a bid split in one end.

New mounts are always a good idea when digging as deep as an engine swap. Going with poly isn't quite as clear cut as you might think it is. Poly mounts are very stiff, they don't give much and transmit a greater amount of engine vibrations to the frame. I.E. a harsher feel. It is reported that they do seem to last longer than the rubber mounts. ... but mounts in general last a long time. ...... I went with poly mounts on mine.
