I have a 79 CJ7 with a T-150 . I'm putting a mostly stock rebuild 74 401 In. What flywheel and clutch would you guys say put in. The jegs flywheel says it takes a 10.5 or 11in clutch alot of the clutches I find online are smaller then 10.5in. Thanks

You MUST use a 401 f'wheel in a 401. The clutch is the same in either, and I like LUK.
If you're going to a 401. Put a 4 speed in......;)

So jealous, look up what size is in your current set up and go with that size

Yeah I read I need a 401 flywheel and I no the input shaft is 1 1/16 just when I was reading the luk clutch it said disc size is 10.375 and the 401 flywheel say 10.5 or 11 in clutch will it still work? Trust me I no I need a 4 speed heck I'm just glad to finally be getting a good running motor the old AMC 304 I got is about done for

Give/sell your AMC 304 to a AMC car guy.

My 360 flywheel is drilled for both 10.5" & 11" pressure plates. It is likely that your flywheel will be drilled for both the same as mine. Your 401 will generate serious power so you need all the clutch you can get. If I were you I'd go with an 11" pressure plate & clutch disk that fits the AMC 150 . I also prefer the Borg & Beck or 3 finger clutch over the diaphragm clutch. Yes, some will say the 3 finger clutch requires more leg pressure than the diaphragm unit. Mine is a Hayes unit from Summit. It's a standard GM bolt pattern.

Has to be a 10 spline if memory serves me correctly

Different balancing, you have to use a AMC 304 flywheel unless you have the 401 flywheel balanced as an assembly with the AMC 304 internals.

Not enough gas savings to make the change worth it-IMO
What MPG do you see with the 401?

As CJ wrote, the AMC V8's are externally balanced through the flywheel.

You are not likely to see better mileage going from a 401 to a AMC 304 . My CJ with a 360 in it and fairly tall gearing pulls in ~11 mpg.

With that being said, there are a lot of people that would love to step up to the big 401. You should have no trouble selling it for decent money.
