Went ahead and ordered a bolt kit. Looked at hardware store and I'd go broke buying individually. The pan is reusable but appearance wise is awful. I may just get a pan while I'm at it.
Does it matter if I do heads and intake first? Bolts aren't here for the rest of the motor and a buddy is coming over tomorrow who has a torque wrench. The machinist told me timing, oil, heads then intake. So not sure if that's the only order
My book has specs for AMC 304 . Will all 360 torque specs be the same as the AMC 304 with rockers and intake and all? In the book it says that even though the Manu does not address it, 4 head bolts go through the water jacket and experience has shown that they need sealant on threads. It doesn't specify which. Should I put Teflon on all of them or what type of sealant do you recommend?
That sequence and torque are fine. Starting in the middle and spiraling out is always going to work. I'm guessing that the different torque specs are due to differing head bolt sizes. 7/16 equipped engines are usually 80-100 and 1/2 are 100-120. On a side note, I asked a guy who builds engines for Baja teams what I should torque my head bolts to because I found specs of 100-120. He replied that it didnt matter after about 100.
Grab some pipe dope/thread sealant at autozone or napa. I put it on all the head bolts. Torque in three stages like 30-60-90. One thing you want to avoid is having the last sequence being a small increase; like from 80-90. Having a little dab of oil on the surface where the head of he bolt is clamping down on the head is a good idea.
Rookie question. Can I paint the harmonic balancer? If not, can it be cleaned with something harsh like brake cleaner? It's new but off the old motor so it's greasy
