Just bought a 71 says Willy on the title. Pulled over to a gas station and the gas nozzle wouldn't go far enough into the pipe. The gas kept on spitting out. What's the fix? The gas tank input is driver side rear and is too shallow. It's a four cylinder, and man I couldn't barely get that sucker to do forty anything over she started making a whiny/scream type of noise so I listened and kept the speed to a minimum. The car was someones project that is now my project. It didn't come with a spare tire or a place to mount one, and no tool box.
To do list:
1-Get that gas tank to be able to be filled at a gas station like normal.
2- Brakes stick with the drums or convert to disk?
3-How to get the top speed up to 65 it's the original rebuilt 4 cylinder
that's what i was told(lol)
4-Needs windshield wipers and the motor

Welcome to the forum!
I have the same problem with our 79 CJ7 . The way I solve this problem is to just barely put the nozzle into the tank and start the fuel delivery very slowly. After about a gallon or so, it's almost as if the fill neck needed to be cooled down or something, but the fuel then flows normally until the tank is full.
Brakes are kind of up to you. We have disc front/drum rear on our 79, but on our 59 CJ5 we have drums all the way around, although we did up them to 11" drums. Disc is nice for driving on hilly or mountain trails.
65MPH in a 71 CJ with a 4?? not likely! or even safe unless you realy make sure everything is in great condition. You probably have 5.38 gears in the differentials, maybe 4.27s, but either way, 65MPH would have that poor little 4cyl. screaming!
As for the wipers and motor, most of the Jeep vendors carry them. Even Rock Auto has motors for around $82.00

Well now I've really gone and done it. Got a hold of an 8 cylinder engine from a Chevy impala. What would be the best manual Transmission and gear ratio. What kind of gas tank do i replace the shoe box sized one that's in there now and where would i fit it?!?!? Also there is no emergency brake, lol
So I guess what I'm looking for is to have a build plan that would suit the Impala engine.

Your title is wrong, should be Kaiser Jeep.
Not a big deal, wrong info does get passed along.
I would just run with it.

I'm not sure you can fit a V8 in the 71 Engine compartment. In 72 they enlarged the engine compartment to fit the V8 engines stock. You may have to think more along the lines of a good V6, which would be better on gas mileage and still have plenty of power depending on which way you went...

Check here out: https://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f102/cj5-1955-1971-a-11911/

There is plenty of support and off the shelf stuff to throw the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 's from those years in there as I believe the odd fire and even fire options both came stock in them.

If you wanted a V8 - you can probably make it fit, but it will be real tight in there...

From there, you have to decide what your jeep is for - wheeling, street only, street and rock crawling, street and soft trails, etc. That will help you decide what components you'll want to source moving forward.

FYI - moved this thread from the site help and FAQ section to Misc CJ discussion section

Wow you jumped right in, welcome aboard from Texas, we would love to see pics of your beast :chug:

Chevy V8s have been going into early CJ5s for almost as long as they have been going into flat fenders.
Some of the parts/pieces might be a little harder to source now but don't let that stop you.

Thank you for the correction Hagar.

I just knew they increased the engine compartment in intermediate CJ's to fit factory V8's, I thought early ones were much harder to locate a V8 in without heavy modification to firewall and fan / radiator system...

But you are correct, the V8's can fit.
