67 GTO Post Coupe, 500hp restored, owned 25 years, 73 Jeep CJ-5 no rust survivor, 304, 4 speed, 33" tires, lots of mods. Just learning all about it.
Whats the best way to change the exhaust on the AMC 304 V-8 from the dual side exhaust going out side the frame on both sides? (pipes going under frame to the mufflers mounted along the outside of the frame on both sides) This looks like a problem if your doing much crawling. One good rock and the exhaust is history. Looking under the jeep there is no room on one side inside the frame and some room on the other side. No room to go over the axle to the back so I would still need to exit the exhaust in front of a rear wheel. Thought you guys might of seen how they have done this. Dont see a way to keep dual exhaust. Looks like I would have to go back to a single exhaust.

My 73 CJ had several sets of fenderwell headers with side exit exhaust. I finally converted to a full rear exhaust and it was an excellent change.

I went to a custom exhaust shop and had them tuck a small set of flowmaster mufflers inside the frame and route the exhaust out the rear. Much quieter and no troubles on the trail. I would suggest a rear exit at the corners. I have mine straight out the back and get exhaust backdraft through the rear window if it is open.

They had to oval the exhaust tube creatively a bit on one side to slide past the Transfer Case .

Thanks for the reply. I got under the CJ agian and looked a lot closer and I could get a pipe down the passenger side after all and the oval pipe would give a little more clearance. Its a tight fit but workable. Also in looking at the rear I could go over the axle. And I will keep in mind the side exit instead of out the rear. I am sure I would have the same problem as you with the fumes. Just needed to look closer, Thanks for the Info.
