I have a 73cj5 that I bought last year and got to drive for only a couple of months before the Transmission wouldn't shift anymore. The clutch is good, doesnt need adjusting. It just won't shift. It started getting difficult but would go in with just the right timing. Now it's not going into gear at all. Help!

When it happened to me I pulled it and had it rebuilt.

It was T-176 and I had a friends uncle who does trannys for a living do it and it cost me $500. But for the peace of mind that it's right was worth it.

There are little pads on the synchros that may have slipped out a bit and are jamming the shift forks. This happened to my T-176 several times and i yanked them out for the 3-4 gears. You need to pull off the top cover and look inside. You can fit them back in or pull them out but then you will have to double clutch for the downshifts.

If your tranny is stock it will be a 3 speed T-15 or the optional T-18 4 speed.

The first thing I would do is remove the fill plug and stick your finger in to see how much fluid you have (should be at or just below the fill hole). If you don't feel any fluid with your finger remove the drain plug. I would recommend using a filter to catch any debris for inspection (paint filter works good). Very low fluid levels creates heat and binding. You should have 6.5 pints in the T-18 and 2.75 pints in the T-15 .

If all looks good I would remove the top as Kane mentioned to have a look see.
