Build Thread '76 CJ5 351w Swap

Going to be a few weeks before I get my headers back from Jet Hot, so I'm looking for more projects to take care of.

Took the blower box and fresh air intake out, cleaned them up and painted them with Rust-Oleum black hammered finish.

The fresh air box had some damage to it and the PO did a crappy fiberglass repair, but I don't feel like buying a new one, so I just painted over it. It still strong...just gave it a fresh coat of paint and it looks good now.

Might take out the seats and benches and raptor line the interior. I have zero paint skills and zero experience, so I'm not so sure about it. I've got half a mind to get a quote from Line-X. Can't be any more expensive than a truck bed of I take all the interferences out. Any opinions out there?

Going to call my local shop tomorrow morning and see. I probably won't go on the bed edge because I have my snap rail for the soft top. I'll probably have them go over the lip on the door area. The paint is pretty beat up from seatbelt buckles.

I think I paid $400 to get the bed of my truck lined a few years ago. Can't imagine it being much more than that. All of the interferences are out as of this evening, so that should keep the price down.

It was the same, but with the Jeep T-18 . I could have used it on the new setup, but it didn't have the extra tab on it for the Ford bell housing. I guess I could have adapted it, but it was much easier to sell the AMC 304 with my old combo attached to it.

In the end, it was a few hundred bucks more to sell all my old stuff and get a newly rebuilt Transmission and tc than it was to keep everything and wait forever to sell just the AMC 304 . And I got a fresh drive train out of it.

Well, she spent over a week at LineX...turns out the PO covered the inside of the tub and fenders with some sort of rough epoxy coating before painting it black. He didn't prep the steel too well because it was flaking off in a lot of spots. Unfortunately, it took the shop 4.5 days to grind off all the garbage that was laid down.
I had them do the inside of all 4 fenders as well. All in all, I think it was worth the extra money to have someone else do it professionally. I spent the $100 extra for the premium coating so it'll stay bright.
Turned out great and worth the money in my opinion.

Back home and back in business. Installed the LUK clutch kit. I wasn't paying attention and out the flywheel on before the bell housing backing plate. Pulled the flywheel off and out everything in how it should go. Pretty straightforward.

Installed the fresh air intake, blower box, heater core and fan. They were all in the corner collecting dust and spider webs, so had to clean them off first.

Hose kit came in this morning from Summit. I used their 302 kit. Heater hoses were plenty long and I cut at least a foot off of each one. Otherwise everything fit just right.
Had to fashion up my own fitting for the heater hose out of the intake manifold. Went through a few fittings because I kept hitting the intake...no real room to make it simple. Had to get a little creative. I have two temp sensors...the one for the Sniper is in the intake where it should be on the driver's side, and the one for the temp gauge for the speedhut speedo is on the passenger side Jerry rigged into the heater hose system.
Yeah, it looks a little weird, but it works.

New dash came in from Double D Fabrication. Took a while but it's exactly what I wanted. Now to get the paint matched and get it sprayed.
I went with mostly stock, but added 4 holes for switches and USB chargers to keep things charged on long trips.
After the paint cures, I'll be able to run electrical. It's all coming together...

Took care of a few more things this week. Got the dash painted to match the rest of the CJ. '76 Toyota Orange was a perfect match. Not sure why the PO picked it, but I like it. Got some of the stuff on the dash. Waiting for a few new switch bezels to make everything look clean.

I also struggled the last few hours installed the hydraulic clutch master cylinder. Took the new pedal assembly (from an '80 CJ w/ 2.5l engine) in and out about a dozen time making sure everything was lined up perfectly before I started drilling holes. For reference, mounting holes are 2-1/4" center to center, and the hole for the pushrod will need a 1-3/8" hole saw. Everything fits perfectly and it looks great. Now sure how the newer CJs are, but the front clip support rod sits about a millimeter above the MC cap, so I'll just have to move that out of the way when I go to fill it.

The hole above the MC is for the washer fluid hose. I'll have to trim the grommet to make it fit properly with the MC in the way.

Tomorrow I'll knock out the slave cylinder and get that taken care of.

Gotcha. That's where it ended up living after lining it up with the backing plate on the pedal assembly. Everything is straight. Minor in the grand scheme of things when it didn't belong there in the first place.

Looking good, too bad the hose hole got in the way. In 80 AMC moved it over a bit. The cap is close to the support rod and can be tricky to remove, I replaced the stock cap the a billet one and got a bit more clearance.

Me too, I painted a 63 VW bug IH orange years ago, fun little car, unfortunately I rolled in the snow.
