I hope I'm in the right place. My son connected the jumper cables wrong to my 76 CJ5 , jeep would not start after that. I replaced the fuse by the battery (30amp) and jeep fired up no problem. When I checked the voltage meter it reads 12 volts until I either give it gas or us the wipers, then it shoots up to 18 volts. Not real sure what I should check next. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You could have fried the diodes in the alternator, since the battery is connected to it. First, I would check the fusible link that goes from the relay to the alternator.
83 CJ7 350 tbi, TH350, D300 twin sticked & clocked, narrowed Chief D44 Eaton Elocker & Moser shafts, Explorer 8.8 Detroit locker, 410's, RE 4.5" spring lift 1" body lift, 35" Claws, cage tied to frame, Corbeau baja seats, HD tie rod and draglink, u-bolts flipped, custom skid plate and sliders, Warn 9.5ti winch with Amsteel synthetic line
Ok I checked the fusible link, all wires look good. I checked the battery with a volt meter and it now reads 14 volts instead of 12. Should I replace the battery before anything else? Thanks.
Are you using the same voltage meter for your tests? Since the one on the dash is probably a bit old and might need to be verified. I would say around 14.5 volts with engine running is what you are looking for, that would indicate your charging system is good. A battery can be checked at a local auto parts before you purchase a new one. That 30 amp fuse does not sound oem, good thing it worked.

*IF*... It's a I-6 With Delco alternator,
You did one of two things,
1. Burned up what little electrical 'Ground' the alternator gets mounted up there on all that rusty metal, paint, corroded alternator housing, ect.
A dedicated 'Ground' wire of at least 10 Ga. to the bolt on the block with the Negative battery cable would be a good idea.
2. You cooked the voltage regulator in the alternator.
*IF*... It's a V-8 with the 'Square Ear' Motorcraft alternator,
Then check the voltage regulator mounted on the fender, it's probably toast.
A bad ground will also screw with the Motorcraft regulators, but it's not as common as with Delco since the alternator regulator gets two chances to ground.
