'76 CJ7 (New Owner) - have questions...

I am picking up '76 CJ7 V8 with 34K miles this weekend. The CJ has been a farm truck for some time and the guy that owned it, Jerry-rigged the out of it... I have a feeling there will be some wiring issues and some mechanical issues with it.

Where is the best place to buy replacement parts online? What things should I look for specific to this year/model? I will need another soft top for it too...

I know the gas gauge does not work, may be the gauge or the float in the tank...

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciate.

Just an FYI, 1976 is transition year for CJs, some of the parts come for the 72-75 mid series with the balance same as the 1977 and up. Not that it’s a bad thing just could be a little more challenging to make upgrades on some things and it was the last year for drum brakes up front. Soft top sales are often made with little mark up. Sometimes it helps to call the supplier direct and ask for their deepest deal. Google jeep parts and a bunch of sites will pop up. Also I find that prices for parts on ebay can be about a low as they can go. (Sometimes)

I would recommend purchasing a factory service manual.

Agreed, first and foremost get a Good, not Chilton's type, service manual for the proper series of Jeep you have. The Chilton's type manual isn't useless, but occasionally to frequently won't have the details you need for some repairs.

Lots of people these days seem to think all the information in the world is here on the internet and SHOULD be free to all who ask. To a large degree that is true, but then again it is best to pay for information you know is accurate. I've had situations where reading the manuals didn't make 100% sense where a quick question on a site like this cleared up the question. It is best to come in with some idea of what or how to fix a problem.

I have a fsm for my rig and after 25 years of modifications there really isn't much I use it for. There are a few items that I use it for though that make it good to have. The aftermarket repair manuals do have helpful info also.

I have a FSM found on the web... after doing some research I think the first mod will be the Team Rush upgrade.

I was also told the fuel pump needs to be replaced... any suggestions?

I live in the Houston area, does anyone know of any good Transmission shops?
