In another unrelated story my older brother had one of these bad boys back in the day. He"d take his little brother with him alot of times to hang out down at the parkway and just have fun. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
Well, here's what $40 clams bought at the wrecking yard, it was already pulled laying in the trunk of a Merc Mystique I could only match by photos from other forums and I'm hoping that I'm not barking up the wrong tree;
The Merc this was laying in had the emission stickers missing as the entire front clip was gone so I'm hoping this is the correct unit. It's the only one available within 50 miles of this consumer desert. What do ya'll think?
Turbo.................I think your looking pretty good with that fan setup and that link that CJ supplied on wiring one of those.............let us know how it works............this is an Educational forum.............were all learning!
One of my oldest friends (a REAL motorhead) had the '65 version of one of these, a blue and white panel, and he fabbed up mounts so he could fit his Boss 302 into it with an automatic on the floor. That van would get down and boogie!
The Contour / Mystyic fan fit perfectly. Instead of posting all of JYG's info, here is a link that still has his write-up images working. -->> CJ/YJ Electric Fans - JEEPTALK.net
Only NOW do I get it! That resistor (R27) on the shroud provides the slow speed and I don't imagine that's going to jolt the fan motors as I feared! So just a 70 amp relay ahead of the whole shooting match should do the trick then! ....unless I'm wrong again!
Called my local NAPA store yesterday to get that HD 70 amp
(and other) relays today and they had no idea what I was talking about. I did my best to describe that photo that Rollbar posted but they want a part no. Is anyone familiar with that relay? It appears to be 4 lug with a .375 inch power Transmission lugs the other two standard 1/4 inch.
Checked with my buddy that used to ride a Sporty but it turned out to be a kicker, so no luck there.
Learned of the part no. but STILL NAPA had no idea!
Part Number: ECH MC23015
Product Line: Echlin Ignition Parts
IMPORTANT INFO: w/ 4 Terminals
I stopped by the local shop that's bailed me out a few times and within 3 minutes he got one ordered that'll arrive in a couple hours. Hurrah for 'old school' folks that now how to look up stuff in books!
Well got that relay in as promised and it looks like the 70/80 amp pictured but the shop favors Carquest and this was made in China.
I've (as many others have had) issues with made in China automotive parts before. On the other hand this is only a relay. I'm thinking either it will work or it won't, being electrical. I'm certain there's bound to be holes in this idiom but given this consumer desert I live and work in, it's the best there is available locally. I'm not going to start the well known rant about the internet shopping being the bane of local shops but in this area it's had it's full effect.
Going on the hunt for a pigtail for this relay today and if all fails I may go with a Hella unit I found yesterday on Amazon, much as I hate to do it !FOUND! Hella part nos. 70/80 amp relay: H41510141 ~or~ 003510517 Harness Connector: H84703001
Any info on finding these friggen relays and socket/pigtails would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid!
Update: got 'em ordered through Carquest and they're coming from as nearby as.........Georgia~!
I like the info on electric fans - I may convert mine.
But I didn't get a clear picture of what thermostat you are running. At speeds over 25mph or so, the incoming air should cool your motor to the thermostat setting regardless of the fan. I would install a 180 tstat and see what happens.
Hi John, When I replaced the water pump a couple of years ago I installed the 195* one as that's what the book (real book with paper pages printed by AMC) called for. Once I get this all mapped out and such I'm going to take a bunch of photos and post a tutorial that'll help others in the same boat. I'm getting a lot of information, but it's fragmented for the most part.
I'm thinking that little blac relay is the high speed 70/80 amp'r but what's up with that big green one? anyone?
Well,I finally pulled the radiator out (good thing I did, one of the mounting flanges was loose) and after removing the stock fan shroud with the small 18" Flex a lite fan I set the Merc Mystique assembly inbetween the tanks and all I had to trim was the top mounting tab.

The fitment was very tight but after hitting the edges with my trusty Milwaukee Heat Gun the stress on the tanks was relieved. I was glad to see that the Merc shroud completely covers the radiator core as I've noticed on some posts there's a 3" gap at the bottom.
(sorry for lack of image quality, had to use my old phone camera)
Then drilled some pilot holes through the shroud and the radiator flanges;
Then ran 1/4" stainless bolts, washers and poly lock nuts;
It really went together so easily and well, I no longer have any doubt that this is a viable alternative to more expensive setups.
Next going to set the works into the engine compartment and check clearances.
What about the 360? Has it been rebuilt and bored out? The one down side to the AMC V8s, in particular the 401, is that they can have overheating problems when the cylinder walls are thinned out a little too far. Not saying that your problem just one thing to check.
The block says it's a 360 but I hear ya as a P.O. could've overbored it sometime in its past.
Edit: Test fit went fine, except my overflow bottle spilled coolant on the floor while I was under it, momentary panic until I detirmined what was the cause. Much more room in front of the water pump pulley than the previous fan assy. Only mod for mounting up is I made a longer stud for the radiator mount in the nacelle in the bottom left, this'll allow me to mount the radiator and the shroud with the same stud, given it's location, there was no other way to go.
One dramatic difference I've noticed already with the Mystique/Contour fan shroud compared to the setup that was on my Jeep, using the stock AMC fan shroud with the P.O.'s 18" Hayden electric fan is the fan tips didn't reach the opening of the shroud, rendering it inefficient.
