I am new to the off road family....been drag racing chevy's for years and you can go from a big block to a small block by changing motor mounts and even the transmissions are inner changeable.

I recently purchased a '79 CJ7 with a AMC 304 v8 ($700) but it was missing the Transmission (told it was a 3 speed) and the Transfer Case was laying on the ground under the vehicle. In reviewing the local craigslist, ebay and classifieds I have found a number of jeep transmissions for sale but not certain what I can put in mine. I have confirmed the Transfer Case to be a m20.

I have a person telling me they would sell me a 5 speed with a m20 Transfer Case out of an 83 CJ7 that he recently unbolted from a 6cyl. Will this mount to a AMC 304 ?

You're original tranny was a T-150 3 speed, a tough little devil made to handle V8 power. The 5 speed you are looking at will not hold up too well.

I was afraid of that....I am curious to know if the bell housing would bolt up to my jeep?

Sorry. Yes, it will bolt up. But I see the boss has already answered that for you.:notworthy:

Thank you, this entire jeep thing is a bit confusing but fun! The networking of this site is incredable and I appreciate everyones patience and support.

So based on ease of installing I should probably just go back to a T-150 based on my Transfer Case , drive lines etc....

So if I were to purchase this 5speed Transmission it shoule bolt up to my bell housing and Transfer Case ? Do I need to worry about the length of the input shaft as I do not have the old Transmission to compare?

Thanks again

length of shaft should be fine, not so sure about the bearing.

Based on that, yes. The T-150 is also a tougher unit, and usually cheaper to find.

Just for clarity, the 79 Transfer Case was a Dana 20 , the M20 usually is found to refer to the AMC20 rear axle in some documentation.

If you want a 5-speed that will hold up to that power, you can upgrade to a NV3550... it just depends on how deep those pockets go!

Or go with a BW T-18 & have a wider spread of ratios than NV3550.
