Build Thread '81 CJ-7 Laredo build
Finally the day has come. I dont think anything makes a lifted Cj look better than a nice new set of 35 in tires. Had to snap this photo right at the tire store. I really get to test them out on my way to work tomorrow. Its snowing now and we're supposed to get 7"-10" of snow overnite.

That...looks...AWESOME! :chug:

I'm jealous. I'd love to be able to use mine to get through this snow. The ride home at midnight tonight should be fun...

looks good Pete. :notworthy:
Be careful out there.

We started with rain yesterday, turned to snow last night, still snowing now, maybe 4" but it's going to 9* tonight. All that slush under the snow is going o be ice.

Id love to be able to keep it in the garage and keep the salt off of it. ;)

Yeah you guys got the "Mix" which really plays games with you. Even with new tires I try not to treat my Cj like a sports car. The garage smells like tires rubber. I love it :chug:

I guess that's one bit of "silver lining" I have going for me...LOL Maybe one of these days I'll get to drive it again.

What kind of rubber is that? And if you don't mind how much did that set you back? I'm saving for some new shoes

Those are 35 x 12.5 x 15 Goodyear Kevlar MTRs. Total with a front end alignment was $1325 so knock off $100 for the alignment if you dont need one.

I got just a set of 31x10.50 KM2's for Dad's Scrambler for about $780 from Discount Tire online. They price match and 4wd.com had them for $209 each with a $50 rebate. Discount tire also had 0% financing for 6 months and a $30 Visa card if you financed through them (the interest rate goes WAAAY up if you don't pay them off in 6 months though!).

I mounted them on NOS OEM white spokes using my Harbor Freight tire mounting stand, and then took them to the local tire shop to have them balanced.

Tires have gotten rediculous price wise (along with everything else), but the feds keep saying inflation is only running 1%.........

The first test for the Goodyears was the 8" of snow we got the other day. I was pretty happy with the way they worked. They definately arent the type you float on the snow. A blip of the throttle though and they'll dig to China. Leaving the gate at work one of my Co workers told me I was throwing some 30 ft rooster tails easy. Good Times. :D

Todays test was everyones favorite , sleet and freezing rain. Usually a MTR style tire is a liability in the wet and frozen stuff. Not these. I was thoroughly impressed with them coming home today. Theres about 3 different tread designs in this one tire and I believe that helps. I'll get a good shot of it another day. Heres a couple pics to give you an idea of the ice I was driving in. These pics are both right before I put her in the garage when I got home.

I hope you gave her a good bath and washed all that ice and salt off of her after you parked her!

I sure did , but they have so much :dung: on the roads its tough to keep up with.

Finally have a little time off this coming weekend. Talked with my brother and Im bringing it up to his place over the weekend. I still get a little bummed out in my garage without my dog there. Anyhow this will be the weekend the bumper / tire carrier gets installed. I promise  . Also on the list is the steering box brace and mount upgrade. One small hurdle has been overcome. Pa state inspection is done!

Hoping for a good day tomorrow.

  • A. heavy duty steering box mount
  • B. new front brake pads
  • C. shocks all the way around
  • D. rear bumper and tire carrier
That'll put it dangerously close to trail ready.

 Total bust today. Drove over to my brothers and cant fit in his garage anymore even aired down. Still had a great visit though. Looks like its time to just face up to my garage and get back to it.

Hi All,

Looks like I have been posting in the wrong part of the forum, so will try this section.
You are still doing it wrong, now you are hijacking Petes Tread. You need to go to the right section and start a new Thread with your ?.

Well I had off this Superbowl weekend and decided its time to start hitiing the garage again. Ive been avoiding mine and going to my Brothers since my dog died. I decided to start with some little stuff not knowing how long I would be down there.

It was actually a good weekend to pick hitting almost 50* Saturday and 45* today. I had Vicki grab me some battery cables and everything I needed for a oil change.

I let her heat up a little and then ran the old Shell Rottela into an oil pan while tossing on my Napa Gold filter. I swapped out the negative cable quick and then proceeded to crack the positive one overtightening it.

No biggee. I thought of my Buddy a few times in that short timeframe but kept on. When I would think of him I went to thoughts of fun things and good times we had and it really helped.

After that I felt pretty good so I moved on to replacing the disc brake pads up front. Thankfully I was feeling pretty good cause one of my calipers was shot. Ran over to Napa and got a new one and slapped it all together. I was in a bit of a hurry so the only pic I got was it installed after the fact.

That led me to today. Feeling pretty good about yesterdays accomplishments I decided to throw the new shocks I had laying around on. I compressed the first old shock to make it easier to remove. An hour later it still looked like this:
