Build Thread '81 CJ-7 Laredo build

Wow

That's awesome, how much money do you have do you have invested in this project, this is something I'm definitely interested in.

Day 1 of driving the Cj back and forth to work. Left at 5am this morning and the weather was perfect for just the bikini top. The light upgrade worked very nice and I didnt have to use my high beams for once. The whole ride in was a pleasant experience.

Leaving work not so much. Came out , jumped in and only got click ,click. Fumbled around for awhile and figured I needed a jump. Got set up for that and still , click click. It ended up being a loose negative battery clamp on the cable that the :censored: who did the headlight upgrade didnt tighten enough. When I see that guy...:D

Easy fix , the best kind. Gotta add power brakes and maybe more of an upgrade as well.

First tank of gas netted me 13.4 mpg. Already made a few adjustments and we'll see what the next tank brings by weeks end. No real updates except for the fact that Im enjoying the hell out of running it back and forth to work. Ive gotta get my Limited up and running soon though , Im getting soft and enjoying this automatic Transmission thing.

I found it interesting that I got a news letter from Daves Off road and this is on sale:

Dave's Customs Unlimited: Jeep CJ and YJ Power Brake Conversion Kit

Im thinking about springing for it. All brand new and bolt in. Id just have to make some lines.

thats a pretty cool site!

:chug:

Made In America. Kinda liking the tube fenders for Cjs also. You get better shipping rates than I do. ;)

I like that i would be able to switch back and forth with stock fenders and tube for heavy wheeling trips...:drool:

The boat sides would be sweet too, but with my muffler location probably would not look / work right or be "street legal"...

It's only money right? :D:D

Nice work on the headlights! I've got an aftermarket harness, but I don't quite remember exactly how bright the headlights are, since I drove with them probably all of 3 or 4 times before I pulled all the lights out.

I'd also highly recommend the power brake swap...there's nothing like it! I'm going to hook up some hydroboost as I'm getting my junk back together...heh, maybe I should have saved that for my build thread.

Im in negotiations with my CFO (Chief Financial Officer :D ) on what I want done before the first snowfall here in Pa. Brake upgrade , new tires and some type of sealed top are on the list. I dont want to drive this Cj in the salt so I have to get the Limited ready to run also. Im replacing that tub for sure so it can see some salt. The SM465 upgrade is gonna be the money pit on that one.

Ha, mine keeps telling me I need a 4wd truck before the first snow this year...I keep trying to convince her that if she lets me put just a little money in mine...I'll have a capable 4x4 to drive in the snow!

But...since I just got word today that my furlough schedule is going to be getting even worse... I seriously doubt I'll be doing either.

Well I have a few things I will do to it before I tuck it in the garage for the Winter. Brakes, power brakes upgrade , new tires , rear main seal , and a little tuning. Seems a little funny thinking about Winter now but I wont get to anything till after Labor Day. Working at 3am puts a damper on my upgrades , but I'll get there. :)

The 2nd tank of gas was gave me results I was pretty happy with. I adjusted my tire pressure up from the 22 to 25 psi they were at to 32 psi. Changed out a couple vaccum lines and the air filter as well.

I was a bit suprised when I ran 167 miles and that pump shut off right at 10 gallons for a 16.7 mpg average. :D If I get another tank like that next weekI'll be very happy. If that holds true Im betting on 18 mpg after the Team Rush upgrade. That would be about the best Ive gotten out of a Cj.

Only time I ever had to do the 3 a.m. thing was when I was in the service. Now I'm lucky enough to not have to go to work until 3 p.m. :D

Was this the quadrajet swap you did? I'm hoping to teach mine that trick, to actually get some kind of mileage somewhere in the double digits. If it got up to 15, I think I would have to make the CJ my DD! I know what kind of mileage (or maybe I should call it "footage") when I was mud racing...and it was impressively bad, to say the least! I'd empty a 4 gallon fuel cell with two 6 second full throttle blasts through a 200 foot mud pit...

I would go back 3rd shift before Id work 2nd. Id get fired for not showing up on nice days if I had to be in at 3pm. :) The first 1/2 tank was at a little over 13 mpg. I didnt touch the stock carb wich is something I usually ditch right off. This one runs suprisingly good. This one was after 6 days running to and from work and was 16.7 mpg. Thats why Im really interested in next weeks. If I can back that up again I'll be very happy

After another 6 days of work , 10.2 gallons for 168 miles leaves me at about 16.5 mpg. I can live with that for now. :) Next up , all new brakes and installation of that rear bumper / tire carrier.

Looks nice and stout. What brand is that? (sorry if you had said earlier, I didn't catch it)

The guy I bought it off of made it himself. Here it is from the other side. It was set up for a Scrambler. It uses the 4 holes for the bumperettes on each side then ties into the frame underneath. I was on the Scrambler forum and saw an ad for it for sale. The guy was located in Va. and I posted something to the effect like " If you were closer Id buy that in a heartbeat."

Turns out he was leaving the next day for a trip to Rausch Creek. To top it off it was a holiday weekend and he was staying at Echo Valley Campground. Vicki and I already had booked our sites there for that campground the same weekend. Its well worth the $400 I spent and will easily hold the 35 in spare.
