I recently bought a 1986 CJ7 2.5l I4 that has 151k miles and was advertised as 'not perfect, but you can drive it anywhere.'

That was at least half true. It wasn't perfect, but it will hardly run. Reminds me of an old man on oxygen.

I am wondering how to start.

I took the carb off yesterday and plan to rebuild it. Then I was going to replace as much emission stuff as I could and see it that would get it going.

Then I thought that might be the wrong approach. Maybe I should buy a different carb and find some info on how to get rid of all the vacuum lines.

I may have stepped in it this time. I am pretty handy and have done things like brakes fuel pumps, water pumps, etc, but am not a real mechanic.

BTW, I have Chiltons for CJ, but they don't have a 2.5 emissions diagram, only the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Maybe it's the same, but it doesn't say so.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have

I can't help you with the 4 cly.( don't know :dung: about them) But if ms. dosen't check emissions I would get rid of all that :dung:.

I agree. If you dont need the emmisions, pull it. As for options, I ran a Weber on the original 2.5 in my Jeep and it ran cleaner and better then it did before.

I would love to pull the emissions and put a weber on it, but I am having a hard time finding instructions for bypassing the emissions.

I am assuming this carb would work..

Anybody have any experience doing this swap?

Thanks

Your emmisions is directly related to the Carter that is currently on it. Everything feeds and reads off of that. Nothing else tells the engine what to do fortunately. This means it's simply a procedure of unplugging and discarding. The Weber uses one simple vacuum line to the vacuum advance on the dizzy, and then the fuel purge system to the canister...no sensors or wires.

All the engine needs at that point is the ignition control module on the inside fenderwell...this controls your spark to the motor.

the swap is extremelly easy. The trickiest part may be figuring out the throttle linkage

Just a note, there is a "DOC" section on this website, has your factory service manual downloadable via PDF, in the event you need better reference than chiltons... which anyone with a chiltons does need...!

Look under the section "CJ7 " its near the bottom.
