Build Thread 86 CJ7 2.5L - The tear down has begun

Got started a couple days ago and hope to have it to my relative to do the body work and paint it in a week or so. He can do his magic while I clean and paint the frame.

I sure hope all the wiring harnesses are easier to deal with than they appear at first sight.



I see there is some kind of hard drive looking box next to the glove box. Maybe the so called computer?




Funny, the seller said the heater would run you out.

There was a monster rats nest under the dash and leaves in the duct work.

From the pictures I see it looks just about like mine. Actually yours is in better shape. I will start a new thread later this week with the pictures of my rig. It ain't gonna be pretty. I just did the wiring harnessES on mine. Yep, did all of 'em except for the lights. Yep, it SUCKED. good luck on the build.

This is where I am now. The body is being mended by my nieces husband and should be ready in a couple weeks.

Anybody that knows my trials and tribulations with the guy that sold it to me... Turns out the floor under the seats had previously rusted through and he cut pieces out of a panel and welded them on top of the rusted ones, then sealed it all underneath with some bedliner material.

Another thing I have found that he out and out lied about was the rear end. He must have told me 10 times it was a Dana 44 , but it is actually an AMC20 (whatever that is lol).

I still can't believe people will lie and cheat people over a vehicle for the sake of a dollar. Worse than being a prostitute IMHO.

I have brushed and painted the rust with rust reformer and ordered a long block today. Hopefully I will get this motor pulled this week and the new one will be in soon.

The only thing I haven't had the nerve to do yet is tackle the wiring. Cluck, cluck.

Looks great! In my research the Dana 44 rear was kinda rare. Especially for a 4 banger.

A couple pictures of the tub after it was repaired and painted. Taking it to get bed liner in the floor Monday. Then the put back together begins.

OK, almost three months later and I am in the final stages of putting it back together and getting some road time.

Have someone coming out to put in the windshield ($160) parts and labor, I supplied the gasket cause I broke the original windshield.

Muffler saturday.

I haven't decided what to do about rims yet. I have the steel ones on it that came with it. The PO had sprayed them silver to give it that chrome look when he bent me over. I am thinking I will clean them up and spray them some color for the time being until I build my cash reserves back up. Any suggestions are welcome.

I agree with Pete, the drivetrain forum would probably serve you better. Especially since I am not a jeep guru compared to most on here. I did not do anything to the chassis or drivetrain on this one except clean it up a little and paint it.

Getting really close now. Lack the wipers and horn to get an inspection sticker. Will get new rims soon. I have been driving it occasionally and it runs great. I never thought I would be finished, but it's within sight now.

Since this photo, I have painted the rims silver and put the stock centers back on and put Jeep decals over JOOP.

Two windshields were broken during installation and they ended up having to cut one 1/16th of and inch off the top. I have a new frame and it is apparently a little tight.

Thank you CJ, I hope I am a credit to the profession of Jeep hobbyist.

I can't wait to do another one with a wiser viewpoint.
