Hi Y'all,
I’m not only new to the site but I also just recently bought my first Jeep last week (86 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ). She needs a lil Love, due to the fact it was sitting for a while, like total engine gasket swap, also I have to replace all the Frankinbolts I found holding the engine together and what I’m told is a bad Carb. (When in idle and I get on the gas it will die out, but if I ease into the gas she runs like a champ???) I’m told it is a Bad Carb so I purchased a rebuilt Carter carb from Summit. Ok now to my question... I’m pretty sure that it already has the Nutter Bypass done and I’m wonder what I’ll have to do in order to get the new carb to work with my Ol' Goat??? Any help will be appreciated, thanks for being patient with this rookie.

Sounds like your old carb just needed an accelerator pump. They dry out when they sit for a while.

I assumed it would be something other then the part i bought...
I will research an accelerator pump (I'm guessing i could have got one for a "little" cheaper) not sure what it does but i will...
Thanks Old 9

I just ordered the carb on Friday I'm guessing it will not be here for a few days, I was just trying to plan head for once.

Thanks guys

The accelerator pump in easy terms is the part of the carb that squirts a bit of gas in to accommodate the air that goes in when you step on the gas. A bad one will cause hesitation when you step on the gas. They come in a carb rebuild kit so you allready have a new one. Hopefully it will work and run so you can enjoy it ASAP!!!

Thanks TinMan
I did a little research and its sounding like the accelerator pump just might be the problem, and i hope so it is getting old stalling out in the middle of intersections, and I'm not going to stop tooling in this Jeep anytime soon, i think I'm starting to understand what all this Jeep craze is about.

Good luck I still haven't figured it out but thorazine helps.

A good way to check for a bad accelorator pump would be to look down the throat of the carb while it is not running and watch for two streams of fuel squirting out thru two nozzles as you open up the throttle. It should be two steady streams beginning right as the throttle is opened. The pump diaphram can dry out and crack or it can get out of adjustment. The nozzles can also clog up and can be cleaned out with a small drill bit of about .031" in diameter I believe it is. There is a bit of info on the web about that Carter BBD carb for the later model Jeep CJs.

Ok thanks a lot. i have a rebuilt carb on the way so ill be able to play with the old one a bit, maybe i can learn me something bout it. when i replace the old carb with the rebuilt one will i have to do anything to the rebuild to accept the nutter bypass???

The Nutter By-Pass disconnects the computer from controlling carb fuel mixture and ignition advance. You will not have to do anything to the carb. You might want to get a Jeep CJ repair manual for help on that carb plus do a internet search on that Nutter By-Pass.

I have already ordered my manual it was the first thing I did. Thanks again for your help, ill let u know how it all unfolds

When you get your carb check for throttle shaft play. I've seen some bbd's come back as rebuilds that are in worse shape than the one they're replacing. At one time we sent back 4 before we got one that was good enough to use I believe they were champion parts.
