-1975 Jeep CJ5, 360 V8, Headers, Duel Exhaust,T15 transmission, D-20 Transfer case, Twin Stick Conversion, Warn 8274 Winch
-1951 Willys Wagon, 4 cylinder, "F" head, little rust, very close to stock
I need more room between the brake pedal and the steering wheel. I'd like to remove the stock pedal, notch the are and straighten the bend some, not a great amount, but some. The foot pad will also need to be notched and bent to return it to a stock angle. My question is, will there be any problems with welding the notch. I don't believe the pedal arm is cast iron so it seems like welding would be no problem. Maybe not though.
 
I had a problem with the brake peddle dragging on the steering column and found it easier to put shims on the column mount to drop it than to change the peddle.

BUT speaking for my own observations the entire drop peddle assembly is steel and except for any bushings is quite weldable.:D

IPPort - I thought about shimming the pedal stop, but the pedal needs a complete stroke to bleed pressure off after braking. I am going to replace the master cylinder with a boosted system and the arm is adjustable. There might be an opportunity there to adjust the push rod and adjust the stop position.

Lumpy - That was my impression. Then someone, a fellow jeeper, said that the pedal is caste steel and it wouldn't weld worth a darn. But steel is steel, why shouls a cast item be difficult to weld. Have you got experience in doing what I'm suggesting. I've got to lower the pedal, my knee joint is taking a beating by the twist required to press the pedal. The knee doesn't hurt when I'm driving, but afterward it lets me know that I shouldn't be flexing it that way.
 
The few Jeep CJ pedals I have welded were heavy gauge stamping.

I ended up putting an additional return spring on the brake peddle. with the booster on it it had just enough weight to drag the brake just a little and not all the time.
 
IrishCJ6 - Elaborate, talk to me son. What did you do and why did you do it? I bet it was for the same or similar reasons.
 
Sorry haven't been on in ages, mine was all screwed up from the previous owners butchery. Mine was more to play around with pedal angles and also pedal offset to set my upgraded booster setup. However in the end I ditched the entire pedal and built one from scratch so that the ratios were right and it fitted where I wanted it too.
