Hello to everyone,
New to the forum. Just purchased an 85 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6 engine and a 3 speed automatic Transmission . Trying to clean up under the hood a little and would like to remove the air conditioning to make a little more room under the hood and dash. I didn't want an air conditioner, it just came with the jeep. Is there anything I should not remove because it is linked with some other system, especially pertaining to wiring. I want it all gone but I don't want to cause a problem that could have been prevented with a little caution/knowledge. Thanks for any advice.

I would wonder if you could get any money for that freon gas still in the system? like from an a/c shop. That compressor under the hood and some of the additional lines and fittings can be used for an onboard air system, you could research that online. Thats is the system I have been using for years. With that a/c setup it might include the larger alternator which can be good to have. That is about all I can offer.

I try to get all the ac systems I can. Living I south Texas, you have to have ac in the summer if you ever use your jeep for more then just cruising. You can send me that one, I need it for the CJ5

Lol...I was just going to post the same thing...all us out west are like AIR CONDITIONING!!!

I was just figuring out how to add one of these to my CJ7

Unbolt underdash unit, unplug two wires going to fusebox, remove firewall bracket that holds up the blower motor, unhook hoses from underdash unit.

Remove radiator, unbolt condensor, undo hoses, remove condensor

Unbolt alt/compressor bracket.

You will need a new alt bracket, and probably a new belt for your alt.

I would leave it there. If you do take it off, do it carefull and sell it to someone who needs it.

I used to scoff at A/C in a CJ, then I got one with A/C, and I've picked up two A/C units over the years to put in my other CJ's. I rarely use it, but it's nice to have.

I just last week removed the compressor from my '80 CJ7 . The alternator stayed in place underneath the heater hose outlet off the water pump. Alternator has double pulley, so needed two new short belts. Other than that, no change.

I like running with the doors off, and it gets so hot here, the A/C can't even come close to comfort-cool.

On the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , the dealer installed A/C has the alt on the top, and compressor on the bottom. The compressor belt goes from crank pulley to compressor, and then a smaller belt goes from compressor pulley to alt pulley, so if you want to remove the compressor, you have to take the bracket off with alt and compressor, get an alternator only bracket, and a new belt.

I guess you COULD just leave the alt mounted on the existing bracket, and remove only the compressor, but either way you need a new belt, and if it were me, and I was trying to clean up the engine bay by removing A/C, I would go with the simpler Alt-only bracket, and that also would allow the owner to sell the entire A/C system to someone as a bolt in unit.

On the factory installed A/C units, the alt is on the bottom, and since mine are all alt-on-top I'm not sure how the belts are routed on those.

Wm69, appreciate the info post. I just walked in from stretching the belts and locking down the alternator in the position on top of the heater hose off the water pump. Had to some blacksmithing to get the brackets to align the pulleys, but she's finished.

The reason I worry about this seemingly minor thing is that I'm installing a junkyard Delco-Remy 12si quite soon, before I ditch the rigid fan and mount twin Mercury Mystique or Ford Contour electric fans.

Take good care of Arkansas for me

Well, thanks to the recommendations it all came out pretty easily. I managed not to tear up anything. I still have to get a new alternator bracket and belt. Sure did make a lot more room under the dash and the engine bay.

I think there is a big difference between AMC V8 alternator brackets and six cylinder brackets, so all my work won't be of help. I did do some more blacksmithing (My great-grandad was a blacksmith and carriage maker in Jonesboro) on a brace to keep the alternator from moving when engine speed change put more tension on the two belts.

I expect this might be what you've had to deal with. I kept this photo just in case I ever have to work over another Jeep.

bonne chance,

Denny

Has anyone deleted their AC, I was thinking of it?

The ac is a seperate system feom everything else because it is added after the jeep is built. You might have a stepper motor on the carb to raise the idle when the ac is on but other than that, remove it all and resell it to get some more parts money.

I know here in south texas, people want to add ac to their jeeps

I did, and converted the A/C compressor into an air compressor.

I did the air compressor conversion also. Just give it a squirt of oil once in a while and don't forget to turn it off when not in use.
