Is anybody watching this program? I just started. The Range Rover just lost it's rear drive shaft. Obviously the front doesn't have a locker in it. I am amazed at the terrain they are driving over with relatively little trouble. Especially considering that the RR isn't built out as far as I thought it would be.

I do admit to being a reality TV addict. That I as long as I don't smell a script in the mix. The minute I believe there is a script I stop watching.

Caught a bit of it. Noticed the Rover had an open front end too. The whole concept seems to be based on vehicle abuse. I'm a crawler, not a brawler ha ha

With it being an off road race. Yes, a little light weight, I am amazed at how well some of the vehicles are keeping up.

They must have gotten slammed in the feedback from the first episode as this one was a lot more subdued.

The first one they were bashing over trees and not being gentle to the land and treading lightly.

This one seemed to be more on the driving and obstacles and how to approach and get up/around and fix things vs. just fully beating the snot out of the rig (although there was still beating going on).

That 4 banger yota is hanging in there, but the amount of steam coming out of it and how much that engine is screaming, I don't know if it will hang on.

I only saw part of the first episode but so far it paints a bad picture of off roading. Most of us don't tear up the terrain like that, I certainly don't. We have enough areas shut down to us already.

I caught just enough of, I guess the first one, to be interested and recorded the, I guess, second one. The same thought went through my head, not so much the trees I saw which were blow downs across the trail. Yeah I'm going to just slam into a down tree ~6" in diameter with my CJ5 , NOT. It was the driving through a bogg or deep muddy spot that made me stop and think. More than likely, by TV contract, there is a follow up crew that restores the land. If there is they should make a big deal about telling the viewer about it.

You are right about the steam. There is also a place where "Super Jeep " evidently sucks in some water and kills the engine while driving up a river course. After clearing the engine with the starter the thing starts right up again. I thought for sure the engine was water hammered.

Another thing that I enjoyed about the show. The contestants or the teams seemed to genuinely enjoy each others company. Sportsmanship to the highest degree. I'm sick of screaming and nastiness that was so prevalent during the "American Chopper" years. Also there doesn't seem to be the ever present village idiot as in "American Chopper's" Michael Tuttle and "Pawn Stars" Chumlee. The more "Pawn Stars" focuses on Chumlee the more I hate the show.

I think your smeller is broken hedge. I hate to break it to ya but every one of those so called "reality" shows are scripted. Some way more than others. I think Alaska: The Last Frontier has the least hollyweird influence, but they have to inject that "entertainment factor" to keep the ratings up and bottom line, that's the bottom line goal for any of these shows.
If you think about the view from your TV, everything you see had a camera ready to capture it. So shots were setup or "scripted". Two of the guys in it, one driver and one behind the scenes, are on another site giving a bit of insight. The driver can't really comment due to a signed agreement but the other guy didn't sign anything so he's free to talk about things.

You're right about that.

The only time real life has as much drama as "Reality TV" is after real people have been warped by what they've watched on the idiot box.

The influence is anything but benign. It's the cause of a lot of the poor behavior we witness daily.

When people believe that Reality TV is real, they begin to believe that they should act like the characters they see and that their own lives must be conducted with one drama filled episode after another.

That's why I hate these shows.
Although I have to admit the only time I watch any of them is at other peoples houses.

Like I didn't know this was going to happen..... Sorry to bring it up. I made the mistake of thinking this might be kind of fun.

I am no fool, yes there is scripting in the mix to some degree. I believe they film what happens during the time period of the show, then work the film along with on camera interviews to make an interesting show. Also cameras are set up to catch the action, but I'm not convinced that the action is faked. For instance the Gold Mining shows(Crab Fishing, Truck Driving, Logging, Wreckers hauling wrecks out of ditches, some of the Alaska shows and the live Cop shows). When they are going to move some equipment some room is made for the camera to film it properly with the hope that something out of the ordinary is going to happen. Yes, we are seeing a Television Show, but it's capturing real life situations. What I absolutely can't stand is a show trying to look like a reality program that isn't reality at all, it is pretending to be reality. For instance a few years ago there was some sort of bounty hunting program on. In one scene the real cops were supposed to be involved, but not a single vehicle had the word "POLICE" on it and the "COPS" didn't have identifying marks on their vests. The whole thing was poorly done. Then there was the Megaladon, the Mermaid and one on the end of the world junk pretending to be something real but was so very fake it was sickening. Honestly though, I do like the Bigfoot shows which I find simply entertaining. Probably because I really do want there to be Bigfoot or would that be Bigfeet in this world. Ghosts, not so much.

I think, Bigfoots, would be the word.
:)

:) Yes, probably, maybe like deer. There are no Deers.

Also, some of what we call reality TV is actually more a documentary type program. For instance the various shark shows that are showing actual science taking place. Or the Oak Island program. This is a real mystery that has fascinated me for decades and they are spending a lot of money trying to figure it out. The giant program, I'm not so sure about that one. Just look at the NBA, there are some mighty big folks right there. Are they giants. No, just the occasional abnormally big and athletically talented people.

Then there are the Moonshine programs. I just don't know about those. One thing is for sure, I'd like to brew up a batch just for fun. The other day I was in front of a store that sold "Wine making, Brewing, and Distilling products", isn't the distilling something new?

Yeah the Moonshiners show is one that you have to question how they can make a show about doing something illegal, give them fame, run it for several years, and no one gets busted! But the one show that bugs me of just how fake it is, is the Amish mafia one. That is simply a made up premise to begin with but the other things they have them doing..... bs! I live in the heart of Amish country and they DO NOT portray those folks in reality.:(

The Amish moved up north in New York where I spent some time wasting money in College. While I can't say as I spent time with any of them, the local people didn't have much of anything bad to say about them. Seemed like well grounded folks to me.

I admit to watching the program, but I took it with a heavy dose of salt too.

That isn't the type of program I truly enjoy. Learning about a way of life I'm unfamiliar with is what some reality television is about for me. For instance all the different types of fishing, along with the different boats doing it amazes me. Traditional fishing boats, short chunky boats, big ol' lumbering boats, net boats, drag boats, long line boats, crab and lobster boats. I enjoy seeing the different boat designs that have evolved for every type of fishing. When the catch comes over the rail I admit to being right there to see what is in the net. Then there are the blue fin Tuna Boats and their catch. Again, I'm right there when the catch is weighed and the $4,000 checks for EACH fish are handed out. Sure I know it's stupid, but I love those shows.

Oh man, I've had a couple glasses of Coke mixed with commercially available Moonshine tonight. Things are beginning to swim a bit and I need ot stoop typinggg for a while. Good night my friends..... Lookie there Tickle (Moonshiners) cooked a pig in the ground for their fake TV Christmas dinner, it's raw o' what will they do now. Good night gentle men................... :)

I caught the episode last night where the RR shelled the rear DS. How in heck does that Jeep get anywhere, as low as it sits? Maybe I'm just partial to lifted rides........but one would think it would benefit from even a modest lift. And it appears to be so top-heavy, with all the gear. But still entertaining, overall. Different, anyways.

"Reality" shows. Pfft. "Pawn Stars" is a sham; they're not open as much as they portray. "American Pickers".........those two need to do a bit more research on what they "find" before running off at the mouth. I've caught them in glaring errors several times. (But........these two are the ones I end up watching......)

One must wonder how ChumLee has survived to whatever age he is, if he's really that block-headedly dense. He fell out of the Stupid Tree, and hit every branch on the way down....

"American Restoration" is about the only one that appears to be remotely approaching "reality"......and "Counting Cars" isn't bad.

It's a wonder "Ax Men" has run this long; they all seem to be trying to kill or maim each other in the previews, with logs & vehicles flying about.

OK........shhhhh........commercial break's over.........

I'm not big on lifting a vehicle. Tire size does make off road life easier, but taken to extremes can be bad as well. Good generally wide aggressive tires that lift the diff. up a little higher off the ground is really what gets you places ......... well that is until water comes into play, even then shielded wires and a snorkel kit will get you home. I don't have much mud or water to deal with here in Arizona. Even here a little mud can hide a deep slippery mess.
