But how do you get the plow on the ground?

When I was a kid the only 4x4 vehicles you saw had a plow rig mounted up front in the winter. I actually asked my dad if you could get a 4x4 package without a plow rig.

And .... Where do the Bigfoots get their snow boots from?

Who wants to plow it when driving through it is so much more fun? :D

I have lived and learned, but back then snow was for snow machines and trucks were for plowing. Plowing looked like a lot of fun back then, heck it still does. As a grown up you got to play in the snow AND help your neighbors at the same time. Then came the rigs with hydraulic rams so you could change the blade angle without getting out of the truck. More fun and more fun to be had in the snow. ..... maybe times were different back then.

Snow is what got me into Jeeping. I have a remote mountain cabin 7 miles beyond a plowed road. I used to use a snow mobile to get in and out, what a pain in the *** ferrying people. I noticed a Jeep club drive by with no chains and no problems. Now I'm one of them! Ive got 35x13.5s with LSD, lockers and gearing, air down to single digits and haven't been stumped yet. The only problem is other 4x4s see my tracks and figure they can do it too. Can't tell you how many guys I've had to rescue over the years. Love my CJ all year round!

There is another thread on synthetic winch cable/rope running. there is much discussion on mud being hard on the cable. At least 2 of the guys on the show are using synth. rope in ugly muddy conditions and they don't look like they are washing the mud off. I bet the rope will be trash before the show is over.

The lower 48 guys in their "Super Jeep " seem to have more cool gadgets than the rest. I'm wondering if a smaller earth anchor could be fabricated, theirs have gotten everybody out of a few bad spots already. Granted they were in DEEEeeeeeppp mud, but I was impressed.

Do you guys drag your winch cable as much as they seem to do?

With all the hype their 350 Chevy engine is getting for being a powerful beast I bet there will be a bump in demand for 350 SBC engines in jeep type vehicles. The old "Cheese Box" land cruiser is doing well and they never talk about the engine in that thing. Last night the completely red neck passenger got knocked completely out during one of the legs. He seems to flop around a lot, I'm wondering why the guy doesn't wear some sort of seat belt to keep him in place.

One of the drivers is a woman. Not bad lookin', but I wouldn't want to get on her bad side. She looks about as tough as they come.

The trails look rough, but well established before the show started filming. I do wonder about environmental damage.

I saw the guy get knocked out, he took his glasses off wiped his face & then passed out? Seat belts, and he needs a helmet.

I made a anchor out of a aluminum stop sign post (Dead Man)with all the holes and use spikes from concrete forms, because in OR you need more then a tree saver and sometimes that anchor they use will not work. But later I plan on getting one of those and the plastic ramps. I have seen a couple of different size anchors and a lot more home made ones.
I drag the cable to the vehicle or the object, and when done with the winch I wash it down and spray lube it.
Go Super Jeep !

There are several scenes where they are scrambling right along the trail and you can see he rope dragging along under the jeep. I wonder what happens when they run over it. I'd think the rope/winch would be yanked pretty hard. Of course they are driving on some slick goopy mud so the tires probably wouldn't get a good grab on the cable.

Finally watched my recorded version of Sundays show (12/28/14). Mud, mud and more mud. I'm beginning to believe that I need a land or is it earth anchor. A glorified plow really. After looking them up on line I believe it wouldn't be difficult to make one of my own. A decent shovel blade, some pipe and rod for hinges, maybe a hardened point, make it so it will fold up for storage. Sure it won't be used much, but when it's needed a lot of walking could be saved.

The early on working together and team friendships are wearing thin. After all this is supposed to be a race for some serious money. I like the "Super Jeep " guys, but I wish they would use some brains and common sense from time to time. They could occasionally pick a decent line rather than bull through obstacles.

I also notice 3 out of four of the remaining vehicles are Toyotas. It looks like the Range Rover crew just might do a re-appearing act next week in an older Rover.

I know this is mostly bubble gun stuff, but it's kind of fun to see new and different ground. Come to think of it though, the ground doesn't vary much at all. Mud, a few rivers, scrubby low mountains, repeat.... Oh yeah .. cold.

I'm all about helping someone out but with 100k on the line I don't see a problem going to the finish and maybe THEN coming back to help. But the jeep guys are just better prepared. Tough lesson to learn for the other guys. Heck one of the dudes made his own land anchor, I thought that was pretty cool.

I'm itching to see if the trail made land anchor works. The quick look at their welds made hem look a little rough.

I suppose there would be a double edge to going back. Who is refueling these vehicles? What is you seriously break down by going back. I believe that in the case where someone really didn't make it to camp, all of them would go back and help out. Winning is one thing, getting hurt is another.

I thought it was funny to see he jeep guys digging around for their ramps while everybody else slipped right on past them. I kept saying, hook a cable to that thing a drag it out of the mud with the winch.

The sister driver is sure gettin' it done though. Can't say as I care for the Ted Nugent looking redneck guy and his brother. He looks like back stabbing trouble to me.

You know, I watched one episode and I didn't care for it. The stuff they were doing seemed very amateur to me. For instance, the hill climbs.....they didn't look very steep to me, but I guess that could be the camera angle/shot as well.
I may watch it again and give it another shot......:chug:

I went to college not far from where they are currently at. It's not all trail from beginning to end like they are suggesting. There is a couple of two lane highways through that area, but even still, some of the trails they are on look pretty decent. Looks like all of the trails are established, either firelines turned into trails or mining roads that have turned into trails. Pretty decent show I think.

Fastatv - I thought the same thing about the steepness of the trails, but then again I'm always disappointed in the pictures taken on really steep ground. For instance, last summer we were climbing some seriously steep, and I mean SERIOUSLY steep grades, but the pictures made it look like "no big deal".

steel - Ahhh I wondered how they were getting fuel and what would happen if they were DOA. Just leaving the vehicle there seemed wrong and helicoptering them out would be very costy. Of course I know there is some sort of support vehicle with the film crew. Who knows, it might be a monster truck mud buggy that would put all of them to shame.

They have been showing these episodes insanely late in the evening here. There should be a recorded episode on my machine at home. If there is I'll be watching it tonight.

Pictures of hills are always deceiving. I've taken pics of people winching steep hills and they always look like flat ground. It has to do with camera angle i think. Not sure about a support vehicle, But in one of the scenes i saw some large tractor tire type print in the mud beside a stuck vehicle.

Last night I watched the Sunday night or is that Monday morning show. Wasn't impressed with this episode. Far to many commercials with little real action and some stupid driving decisions by the "Super Jeep " guys. These guys go bombing along beating the heck out of their equipment and end up getting stuck. Then the other drivers simply drive around them like it's no big deal and keep on going. After getting unstuck they blow their power steering, how, well that's not explained at all. Then one of the drivers is super exhausted to the point of passing out for a few seconds. I wonder if there's something more, like an underlying sickness. Didn't this guy beat terminal cancer .... maybe not. I hope that isn't true though. Then I have to ask, why are the teams set up with one experienced driver and seemingly a no-nothing grunt as a passenger? Then the Range Rover, now Land Rover guys show up in a replacement vehicle and it's quickly established that they CAN'T win but would tag along anyways. Maybe Range Rover is a sponsor? But the little Rover is doing well. Also, what's the deal with the big blond fella in the Land Cruiser, the War Wagon? He is scared of heights, bounces around like a ball and occasionally knocks himself out by bashing the windshield. Dude, ever heard of seat belts? ....... I am a little worried about the other guy passing out, he yelled at his partner then flopped like a sack of potatoes. I write like I'm really into this show, in truth its only a passing interest seeing the differing driving styles and the terrain keeps me interested though.

I only watched one episode for a little while. Ugly and ignorant is no way to go through life.

Well, I'm ugly so I guess I should quite........... Can't do much about ugly, stupid can be worked on, but there are limits.

The way the program is written. It's not reality.

Maybe so, after watching more than one episode I'm not sure about how real all of it is. There are still parts of several episodes that I have enjoyed.

After watching last Sundays show I've got to say that I'm impressed with how well the old 4 cylinder Rover is doing. It just seems to keep grinding along. While the Super Jeep is, well it's running on 4 cylinders, but keeps soldiering on. I hate to admit it, but I'm beginning to understand why people love the SBC. The idiots driving the Super Jeep keep slamming their vehicle around, but for some reason it keeps going.
