AMC 401 or AMC 360: Newbie install first engine swap

AMC 401 or AMC 360: Newbie install first engine swap
Getting closer! Guess I better start a build thread to stay on topic. I hope y'all will follow and help. Just tore into it and kept going. The front driveshaft is giving me a hard time. I'm having the Drexel cut off the straps at both ends in an attempt to get it removed. I'm confident it was last installed in '81.

Are the accessories brackets and accessories for a 401 the same as the 360? Starter, ps, alt etc.

401 lead is back on and I also have found a machine shop. Sounds expensive but I'm doing this right the first time.

Bueller?

The 401 is missing all brackets and the price is significantly more. I'm leaning toward the 360.

I would get the 401 and source the brackets... To answer your question, yes I BELIEVE all the brackets for 401 and 360 accessories will be the same.

Not 100% on that, but around 99% sure.

Yes.. AFAIK all the brackets are the same between the AMC 304 ,360 and 401. headers are the same, intakes can be the same but you really want to have a 4bl for the 401.

Whats the quote from the machine shop? My local guy says between $AMC 150 -$200 per cylinder. Also look into the oil system upgrades.. Try to find a shop that has a good amount of knowledge on AMC motors.

Thanks guys. You've given me an idea.

Off the cuff quote was $250 per. But they've not seen anything yet.

Made a deal on a 360 today. I thought $250 was a good deal for the entire engine including accessories and brackets etc. ac pump.

I can appreciate the differentiation of a 401 but as priced at $700 plus brackets, hardware, pulleys etc. I felt it better to make a deal on the 360. With that price I maybe ale to still pick up the 401 and use the 360 parts too, if the seller gets right on the price.

360 is in the garage! Yes, I need a build thread.

I am getting ready to put a 401 in my 80 CJ and convert it to an automatic from a 4 speed manual. I will be watching your thread and learning.
