AMC Engine

You're going to get bombarded with thoughts / ideas from truly well-intentioned members on here about finding a different used motor, or rebuilding yours, using a 360 instead, etc. etc. All these ideas have genuine merit and that level of merit varies on your individual situation.

So without asking any questions - you might go to www.jasperengines.com and that will give you a reasonable idea of what you might pay, and what you'll get for it.

If you want to explore other options besides a crate motor, then you can find a wealth of help here for that too...

Where is best place to purchase and price a rebuilt 1970-81 AMC 5.0 liter AMC 304 engine? I'm located in the North East.

Ill start the heckling.

Go with a amc 360. Its a direct swap between a AMC 304 , 360 and 401. The only thing you would need different would be a new fly wheel.

As far as where to get em Jasper seems to be a decent please,, Ive heard mixed reviews but mostly good. I would rather spend the money to have a motor rebuilt then buy a "remanned" motor. At least by having one rebuilt you know whos doing the work and they will usually do a better job.

to give you some idea about a rebuild. the block at the shop right now is gonna coast 425 to clean, bore .030 over and install new cam bearings and freeze plugs.. every thing else is good on the block. Im looking at another $800-1200 for all the new parts including pistons, cam and intake. do for around $1500 I will have a 360 ready to go and know what was done to it.. A reman may just get a quick hone, new rings, bearings and gaskets for $1500.. Id go with rebuild mine any day.

Here is an email I got form Carolin engines. I thought it was a pretty good deal. I liked that they'd pickup and rebuild my motor for about the price of a reman. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I called Jasper and they said they didn't have anything that would work for me in stock.

"A remanufactured AMC 304 or 360 Longblock would run $1396.00 plus a core charge of $395.00 for the AMC 304 and $475.00 for the 360 which is refunded after we receive your core and inspect it. Also we can pick up your engine and remanufacture it at the same price. Also by picking up your compete engine, we can offer a completed version by re-installing your intake, covers, etc for $250.00 extra and $50.00 for painting.
This is an Expert Remanufacture, not just a common ‘rebuild’. The entire engine is professionally cleaned and re-machined. All critical parts are replaced and the engine is spin tested for oil pressure and proper functioning. Our ‘Complete’ version would be complete from intake to oil pan. This includes “Cleaning Properly” and re-installing “YOUR” intake manifold, damper, oil pump, oil pan, oil filter, timing cover, valve covers, and pre-lubing the engine with the proper break-in oil. These are all extremely critical operations needing expert attention! Also available is the installation of other items such as the water pump, fuel pump, distributor, flywheel, etc. We are one of the few companies that specialize in this special ‘completion service’ which can make for a much easier and trouble free installation for the “Do it Yourselfer” as well as the “Professional Installer”. And we have the capability to pre-run and dyno test complete engines. We also offer “High Torque” and “Performance” versions including Complete, Balanced, Blueprinted, and Dyno tested engines.
Total shipping “Round Trip” which is picking up your old core and shipping the remanufactured unit to you is $225.00.
We appreciate you contactingCAROLINA MACHINE ENGINES. Our products are fully warranted in writing and proven by our ‘Better Business Bureau’ rating of A+ their highest rating. Extended warranties are available. We are also members of both the AERA (www.aera.org) and the PERA (www.pera.org)."
