Long time reader, first time poster. I have a 78' CJ5 with the AMC20 I'm pretty certain. Rear drive shaft spins, but tires do not move. Jeep drives fine in 4H. No noise from rear end. Also when it happened I was just cruising around 35,40mph and the jeep just rev'd up no noise, no warning. Was gonna tear it apart in the morning, but any info would be great! Thanks in advance folks!

That's pretty weird, glad you are posting now welcome aboard from Texas, you could have stripped the splines on one of the axle shafts if you still have the 2 piece axle shafts, had that happen to me hard to get anywhere

I'm pretty certain it has the 2 piece, but don't know for sure. Just bought the jeep about 8 months ago, it was an electrical nightmare. Still needs some TLC but with the warmer weather approaching it's got me itching to get the top and doors off and cruise!

First place to look is the axle hub see if the wheel will spin but the nut in the center does not that will tell you which one stripped out.

When the driveshaft spins do axle/spindle nuts also spin?

Haven't checked that yet, it happened on my way home tonight, I stopped the jeep and never took it out of gear. When I got out and looked under jeep drive shaft was spinning. Put it in 4 high and drove home.

Man that was a great occasion to have 4wd

Jack the rear wheels up off the ground and see how much side to side play you have in the tires.
How easy is it to spin the tires(P'brake off)? How much noise do you hear?
Good luck!

My garage is full, and it hasn't stopped raining since this happened. Hoping to look into it tomorrow, and I'll come back and let you guys know what I can muster up! Thanks for all your ideas! Truly appreciated!

Any news?

I had quite an odyssey with an AMC20 in 'Black Betty'. Ultimately I went with a Dana 44 built by Craig at Mac's Jeeparts with a Trac Locker, and no trouble since.

Thanks Craig! (aka Gargoyle Jeeper)

No news yet, I got called back to work, so I won't be able to take a look at it until the weekend I'm assuming. I'll let you guys know what I find out whenever I get a chance!

Quick question, what year did they switch to the wide track? I found a guy online selling both front and rear axle, drive shafts, gas tank, and a 6cyl out of a 1980. Will the differentials fit my 78?

Looks like 82 was they year they changed to wide trac they will either way as a set if they are wide trac axles I think it was mid year 81 when they were phased in the driveshafts you will have to measure because of different Transmission options.

Better find out what R&P ratio these axles have.

I'm not worried about anything besides the axles. I'm just going to buy it all cuz it's dirt cheap.

If it has the 2 piece axles-You haven't gained anything at all.

he's gained a working axle compared to a broke one. there doesn't always have to be an upgrade. if it's a road jeep he can get by just fine with two piece axles. depends really what he plans to do with it. depending on the price of this set of axles he's getting, it would be a good way to get him back on the road again.

if you don't need the six, what would you want for it? mine just died.

What happened to your 6?
If you have ever worked on that POS, 2-piece axle deal as I have. You would know of why I said what I did........
