AMC20 axle

I have a 1986 CJ7 Laredo AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with 999 auto Transmission . Recently the Limited slip went out in the rearend. How do I know if it's a narrow Trac or wide Trac axle?

82-86 was wide track if you know they were never swapped. Measurements are given for axles in our drivetrain database here:

86 will be a WT.
The axle should be a Dana 44 , but I have seen several '20s' on that yr also.
Is the diff cover round? If yes, it's a '20'.
The trac-loc AMC used is a joke, look for a power loc.

Yup, and round means Mod 20 rear end.
That means you have the weak 2-piece axle deal.
Look hard at Moser 1-piece axles for your Jeep.

I was wheelin when the rearend gave up. Driveline turns but wheels don't. Funny smell and no grinding noise at all....

OP-That sounds more like you 'spun' a hub on the OEM axle set-up.

Yup, that's what makes them two piece. Make sure that the woodruff key is still holding them together.

The 2-piece axle came to be, thx to the AMC bean-counters.
The 2-piece axle has a well known history for failure. My first(and last)failure, was about 3 yr after I bought my '7'.
I fix'd the whole rear end issue with a Currie built, Ford 9" axle assembly. Not an issue since.
