Yes Mike, a lot nicer working with clean freash painted parts, but being I'm not doing any upgrades, I will be cleaning and repainting just about every part. This will be my next project. Rebuilding the Ross box.

All cleaned up and apart. When I was disassembling it the piece that was holding the bearings on the top portion of the box was all chewed up. I found some bearings inside the box as well. After seeing all that damage, I wonder how it turned, but when I test drove the jeep it turned just fine. Hopefully after the rebuild it will handle a lot better.

I purchased the rebuild kit from Walcks. The only thing that they didn't have was the sector shaft. I have the V6 and apparently those shafts are hard to find. I have a friend with a mechine shop who is going to remove the pivets, turn them and reweld back to where the flat spot should not ride on the worm shaft. I hope all this will work. I've been getting advice on the Ross steering, it's about 70/30, 70% say get ride of it and 30% say it works fine as long as you maintain it. Once again, I would like to stay as original as possible, so I hope it works.

I came across a link for the sector shaft kit a while back.Considered it for my '67 if I ever rebuild the Ross box. Kaiser-Willys part #938194KA $224.99 . A little spendy so hope your machinest can fix yours. mike
 
Yeah Mike, I've ran across the something like that. It was a sector shaft for a military jeep, I forget which one exactly, but it was suppose to be compatable with my Ross box. They only wanted $400.00 for it. It was NOS.

I think I'll stick to my plan and replace everything for the steering except the sector shaft, then I'll just cross my fingers and hope it handles good.

Next step: Transmission , clean and have a local shop take a look at it.
 
Ya ok then. btw this is a new production for a 1966-1971 V-6 ross box.
You may want to check out there site.they have some hard to find stuff.
 
Hey Mike, what was that site for that sector shaft, I'll take your advice and check it out.
You mentioned you also have a 67 with a Ross box? Is it with a V6?
 
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I did have the compression checked on the engine and all seemed fine. With the
Odomitor frozen at 33,000 miles and the PO not having much history on it, I decided to pull the timing cover off just out of curiosity. I was happy to see that the timing chain did not look like the original. It looked fairly new in fact. Which leads me to believe someone, some where down the line must have done some engine work to it. So I packed the oil pump for priming and replaced the timing chain.

I'll clean up the engine, and replace the upgraded valve covers and air filter, as well as the Delco alternator. Have some "new" old parts from JW salvage and Midwest Willys, both were very helpful in helping me find what I needed for the engine.

Once again I want to apologize for the pictures, I've been posting from both my phone and home computer, where I have most of the pictures. Since we aren't to far from talking about the Ross box, here are a few pictures of when I was tearing it down.

I do want to ask if anyone out there has ever heard of an add on to the box called "tight steer"? I heard it was used to keep pressure on the worm gear, has anybody had any experience with it? Is it worth the money?
 
Transmission is a T89, Three speed. I believe that the T-90 is a more popular one used in the CJ5 's.

Pulled the Transmission with the Transfer Case , ill be leaving them together since they will be checked out at the local Transmission shop. I'm hoping nothing is wrong with them mechanically but will have all the seals and gaskets replaced.

Took several hours to clean it up, but there is a pretty Transmission under all that grease and dirt.

Clutch looks to be in good condition for a 40+ year old jeep. It's beginning to look as if someone has already done a lot of the mechanic work, which is just fine by me since I'm really not mechanically inclined, but I am willing to learn. It will also save me some cash. I have a certain amount to put towards this rebuild. I had a 79 CJ5 that I also took down to the frame and built back up. Sold that to a friend to fund this build. Man I miss that jeep!
 
Thank you Petescj, I reprinted it the original color, Rustic. That's what I wanted to do to the 6, but having second thoughts on the President Red. I REALLY like jeeps new 2014 color Amp'd, hence the build thread name. I'm sure I'll be going with that.

Had spent some time on the jeep, getting parts in and will be working on it plenty! I'll keep the post and pictures coming.
 
Since the frame is done. I'll get started on some body pieces. Let me just mention this olive drab paint is thick.

Used some flat iron to patch the gaping hole where the spare tire carrier was. Then I made some back up brackets to attach to the inside of the wheel well for support as well as being used as support for the new tire carrier I plan on putting there.
