Anybody have any IDEAS

My CJ7 has been sitting for a couple weeks so I fired it up this morning for a little SUNDAY driving. Well it started HARD and when it did it was back firing through the carb.I shut it off and then I noticed that it had a puddle of gasoline under the tank. I can see the top of the tank has a pool of fuel around the sending unit ( its running down the tank and causing the puddle on the ground) ANY ideas as to where the leak is coming from and is it related to the hard start and intermitant backfire through the carb?

That leak could coming from where the gas line comes out of the sending unit, anyway you have to drop the tank to inspect it.

Yeah I kinda figured I was going to be dropping the tank. wouldnt you know its almost full too!
The sender has an inlet /return on it as well. It drips the most at idle so I think thats where the leak is. I needed something else to do anyway

I wish I no wheeling yet with this one. I had to change the oil pan gasket and had the engine lifted a bit to remove the pasenger side motor mount I lifted it with an engine hoist(just enough to slip the motor mount out.

You could still have the original 5/16 fuel line to the tank, Along with the fill, vent and return hoses. An easy way to empty the tank for removal would be to use a cheap electrical fuel pump into some jerry cans if you can get enough of them. Otherwise, I think gas weighs about 6 lbs per gal. The pick up sock will probably need replacing also and any fuel gauge adjustment can be made on the sensor. Clean out 33 years of that has collected in there also. Some guys put a door in the bed of the vehicle for easy access to the sending unit. Attaching the fuel level sensor ground wire directly to the battery can improve its operation. Along with the usual clean and paint you have some work do, so have fun.

You may have a couple problems. Backfiring often means an ignition problem. Often the timing is way off.
It can also mean unspent fumes igniting in the exhaust manifold or exhaust (Ignition still could be the issue here)
How's your timing? Also check the spark at each plug wire. You may want to check each plug wire. If one doesn't have continuity it could cause backfiring.

I'm pretty sure spark is not the issue as the ignition system, from the spark box to the plugs are new. The timing was balls on when I last started the jeep. I've never seen the trap door in the bed idea but I was thinking about it today. It would be a HOLE lot easer than dropping the tanK ( the pun was intended)
