'79 CJ5, 258 I6, T150 w/Dana20, Dana30 front and AMC20 rear. My first Jeep! I'm looking forward to doing some minor upgrades and restoration while enjoying the ride.
Muffler shop told me that if they do the whole system from manifold back it will have to get a catalytic converter. He even showed me the computer readout for my year and engine and it was in the diagram.

If i get a cat it means i need an air pump and all the extra bs. I really don't want that.

What did you guys do for exhaust?

There's more than one exhaust shop around so I'd go somewhere they aren't blowing smoke up your tailpipe.

You can run a cat w/o air pump but risk plugging it up. Need to be tuned near lean as possible. All the air pump does is give the cat some O2 to work with burning off the excess hydrocarbons.

I have a cat, I installed it myself to help with passing inspection, I had a true dual set up on mine but when I went to spring over and installed a traction bar I ran out of room on the left side so I went single exhaust with a cat going down the passenger side out to the corner of the bumper

I have to, if I want to pass SMOG........
LG

Newer high flow cats do not need an air pump.

And probably cost ten times as much...

Couple hundred IIRC when I had new exhaust ran a few years back

No air pump, running Mopar MPI. When I put the 4.0 head on I took it down and had new 2 1/2" exhaust ran. Exhaust guy I use recommends Magnaflow, so thats what he used. Here in the homeless capitol we must use specific cats or the nanny police will impound and crush your car if you do not.

Hole, you're a genius. I havn't been into exhaust systems for a long while so I knew nothing about cats without an air pump but that really seems to be the way to go. I'm doing some research on it and finding a lot of good info.

Thanks!

I have run mine for years with an after market cat with all the :dung: off with no problems. Cat works well.

I also run a short high flow cat with the Flowmaster and no air pump.
I have this setup as well and no air pump. I was running straight muffler without cat unyil this past spring.

Stupid question but did y’all notice a much cleaner exhaust smell after installing the cat? I’m currently not running one and the carbon smell is pretty bad. Also, I can’t angle my tail pipe out the driver side corner due to my larger tires and the axle being slightly further back. So that doesn’t help with the smell either.

I did but I replaced my vapor canister at the same time so I am not sure which was responsible.
