I actually learned on a VW bus with the top cut off but my first vehicle was an '84 CJ7 .. I taught my wife to drive it (a little).

I will get her out when i get the '80 going and then eventually ( about 13 years) will teach my daughter then son..

I a firm believer that everyone needs to be able to drive a manual Transmission .

I started teaching my son how to drive a stick when he was 8. It's easy to teach them the clutch work and let them have fun with it in low range. He's 9 so we haven't graduated to regular gearing but he loves it and it gives him the familiarity. We just tool around on flat stuff and the occasional very small hill.

I've taught quite a few adults how to drive a stick. I think I always end up doing this because I only own manual vehicles. Well, that and only like 3% of cars sold in the US are manuals so I'm the only one people know with a stick.

I do the parking lot thing and have them work from dead stop into second/third without the gas pedal. Helps to get the feel of what the clutch is doing. Prior to this I draw a diagram of what a clutch does and how it connects the motor to the Transmission . You'd be surprised at the number of adults in the world who do not know what a clutch does. It really helps people with their clutch work if they understand what pushing in the clutch actually does. It really only takes a few minutes to learn how to operate a manual vehicle. Most people pick it up quickly. After that it's just practice and scary moments on the road to round out the experience :)

I taught my son at age 8, in a sandrail. The easy part was the clutch. It was harder to get him to understand when to shift. As he got taller he started driving the jeep and fell in love with it. Now at age 21, it's a fight to see who keeps it, haha.

Some 30+ years ago, my dad had me driving his CJ5 any time we'd head out to the desert. Was a lot of fun, even though his clutch was a pain in the rear for me. Those memories are what lent me to buying my own CJ. I can't wait to get my son behind the wheel. He already likes to drive. But can't reach the peddles!
