Anyone have suggestions for something that will work as well as an arbor for keeping the needle bearings in place on the cluster gear until the shaft is slid into place? I have tried frozen petroleum jelly, with no success.

That step is a real pain, I used a piece of 3/4" steel tubing I had laying around. I carefully lowered the gear in place using a piece of bent coat hanger which makes it easier to raise / position the gear. The jelly should keep the bearings in place long enough for you to get the gear installed.

I used a piece of 3/4 plastic conduit and Vaseline to hold the needles in place, if you cut the conduit to just the right legnth it will also keep the plastic thrust washers in place..

I ordered the Dr. Goo (Green) and will head out to Home Depot with the calipers and check out PVC pipe/wooden dowels. Thanks All!

I am sure that Pheonex has a bearing supply house? you need a 2' section of polished cold rolled round stock. Do not get shafting with a key way in it. I grant it is not the cheapest material in the world but it is just exactly what you need for this job.:D
