New member and CJ7 Owner. '86 Automatic AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l Love the thing so far!! Still learning alot about all the little repairs it needs. I purchased it and the seller assured me all of the fluids were checked. I believed him drove it home and left for 3 days on a mini-vacation. When i returned home I started checking all of the fluids and there is no ATF Transmission dipstick.
I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be located on the passengers side close to the firewall next to the valve cover behind the plugs. Can someone please give me some insight if I'm mistaken. Could it be broken off or removed or is there some other way to check the level? In order to fill it do I have to remove the plate in the floor beneath the 4x4 shifter?
Thanks for any help!! -Jason

It should be there. On mine I can see where it goes into the tranny from under the hood. it is at the front right corner of the Transmission .

It should be very close to where your looking. Its possible its missing. The tube and all has already pulled out on mine. The dipstick and tube arent very long. If you look down towards that area and see the Transmission look for a hole about the size of a dime. That would be where the fill tube goes if its missing.

thank you for the help!! Is a new tube easy to install?

or do you know where to purchase one? I've been looking online can't really find anything

Sending you a private message. :) The tube is jst pressed in by hand. It has an o-ring on the end of it to prevent leaking

Thanks for the photos!! Is yours a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l as well? Does it run hot? Mine gets to the point itcan be hard to touch the grille and open the hood but the temp gauge stays low, barely gets into the green. Is this normal?
