1982 cj7 all stock. has the inline 6 with a five speed tranny.
i was wondering if the gearr and guts out of a tj Dana 30 will transfer over to the center housing of a CJ7 ?? i can get a pretty good deal on 4.56 gearing and an arb locker for Dana 30 but it is out of a tj. if it will fit my cj i will go ahead and snag it, any help appreciated! thanks!!

According to eaton,s application PDF all Dana 30 axles from 1971-2011 carry the same part #s for all their lockers. Yeah I know a Detroit is not an arb but my guess would be yes.

I don't know much about tj's but my guess would be that if it's NOT a high pinion (on the tj) it would work.
Best bet would be what tinman did with the locker and check the web sites of some gear makers and see if the part #'s are the same.

the difference between the different D30s is where the pumpkin is of if it is a HP then the gears are backward
otherwise they are the same
one thing to remember is what is the cut off for gearing, what I mean is that there are 2 different size carrier sizes according to gear size on a lot of lockers, so if you are getting a deal make sure the gear size the lock takes is compatible to what you want to run.

Although I've heard of some high pinion 30 s in tjs I've never seen one. Unfortunately jeep dropped the stronger high pinion for the weaker low pinion in the tj maybe to offer the 44 as a stronger option? But any way these guys are right for sure, if it is a high pinion gear set it won't work. But the locker still will and if it's cheap enough just re-gear it and sell the old gears. Still a win maybe!

thanks for all the input. i was just curious because the rear axle that i got has an arb locker with 4.56 gears and the front guts i am trying to buy for the Dana 30 has an arb locker woth 4.56 gears also. just curious if i could get away with not regearing it and just swapping everything over to my housing. i guess i will see if i can find out if the Dana 30 the guy has for sure is a low pinion and all. so if it is a low pinion it should work correct??

All of my books show cj 30s and high pinion 30s using a common set up kit using shims. Tj 30s using a crush sleeve. Incomandos pinion length would be an issue. Still could re-gear it and sell the tj gears no?

yeah i guess i could regear it if i could get if for cheap enough. the guy wants $400 for the locker and gears but i wont need the gears. i found a 4.56 gear set for the cj Dana 30 for AMC 150 .00 new but not sure how much the local shop charges to set up the gearing. last time i had checked it was around $400 i believe.

a extremely common swap is to take a XJ Hp30 and drop it into a TJ, I had one I did it to and see it all the time. the LP D 30 is not any weaker, it is just the gears are running backward that makes them more prone to damage, as far as strength, they are the same

I will run a D27s over the Rubicon and never had a problem, a D 30 is a stronger unit. I do not feel any need for a Dana 44 unless I just want to throw money around. I have wheeled for decades using D30s and never felt it was a week axle.
