So on my scrambler build I am getting prepped for axles to be painted. This is not a show vehicle but I want it to look good. Should I just spray can them for easy touch ups down the road or go full Monty and go with quality coatings like por15 and top coat? I have the product but it is alot more work than simple spray cans I and do not know if it will be worth it on a part that will not have a need for corrosion protection. Thoughts?

I personally about always defer to cans. They're so good these days and I just like being able to spot fix and so forth.

Others will most certainly disagree and I understand their sentiment but this is an individual / vehicle decision.

I've used both Rust Encapsolator and Rustoleum. I would recommend Rustoleum spray can in this situation.

I'm going to use Rustoleum red rust preventer primer and satin black on mine. Quick simple and easy to touch up. Unlike body parts that you can't see or work with well (read rust) axle parts are easy to see and absolutely won't be rusting out any time soon.

I used Rustoleum BBQ High Heat black satin on mine because I had it sitting around and just brushed it on. It's like tar and hard to clean off anything it touches. Looks great even several years later.

You get a lot more paint with the can for the same cost.

Me, too, but I find the axles are easier to wash if I clear-coat over the Rustoleum.

I am going to paint the front axle tonight with POR-15 out of a spray gun then top coat it. I have the material so might as well use it. My buddy convinced me to not take a short cut on this build and he was right. I do all this work to the axles just to skimp out and not paint it the right way. i will post up some pics after the front end is painted tonight.

I did por 15 last night. They look great. I haven't decided on a top coat but I may not need it since they under the jeep I am not worried about the UV issue.

Wow, looking sharp! Did you pain over the bolts on the diff cover? I was planning on doing the same thing to my axles but I've been procrastinating cuz I don't want to disassemble all that :dung:.

Looks good. I haven't got my front one yet, but on my rear, I blasted it, about 3 coats of primer, got my paint at Napa (spray can) of the cast iron color that I have the number in my garage. About 3-4 coats of that, then clear coated it. Put a polished aluminum dif. cover on and it really looks good. I have to do my front one next. Been so busy, but I really got to get moving on this build.

I didn't paint the diff cover. I bought a warn dif guard and plan to remove the cover so I can reseal it. I will paint it silver then with the black diff guard.
