Base Timing Issue (76 Jeep CJ5 304V8)

My son and I are working on his jeep again. Drive-ability is NOOO GOOOOD! Idle is fair at about 25deg advanced timing. We want to set the base timing at ~5deg BTDC but the engine will ALWAYS just stall out. Help us out here please. We need some direction at this point. What can we be missing? When setting timing vac advance hose if off and plugged at carb.
New Distributor (original Prestolite)
Rebuilt motorcraft 2150 Carb (on us)

Do you have a vac. gauge? It helps in setting timing. With my stuff I will run as much timing as it will take. If you are getting pinning you need to back it off some other wise you are fine.

We just had the exact same trouble with a chevy 250. turned out to be a mismatched timing gear... yours may have slipped the chain.

Agree with timing chain issue.
Also, these old jeeps run much better on prem fuel.
