I just got my Jeep up and running again with a little help from my local mechanic and he told me that the battery I have in there is not the right size. I bought it from AutoZone a few years ago and had it sitting in my garage while I figured out my electrical problems in my CJ7 . The battery I have is a Duralast 56-DL and I can't imagine that I wouldn't have looked it up in the book in the store before I bought it. My mechanic told me that it was absolutely the wrong size and I am trying to figure out what size or group of battery I should get to replace it. I am looking at the Diehard or Duralast again, but don't want to get the wrong size. Any recommendations? I have the inline 6 cyl engine...FYI
Thanks!

The tray will fit a group 34/78 battery. I don't know what your mechanic means by wrong size. If what you have fits well and is held down well, I would say it is the correct size.

I looked up your battery dimensions and compared them to mine. Mine is 10.5 in length , 6.25 width and 7.25 hieght if you dont count the posts, 8.25 if you do.

Yours is 10 in length 6 1/16th width 8 and 3/8th hieght. As long as the hiegth measurement is to the top of the terminals your fine. If that measurement is only to the top of the battery itself the additional hieght of the terminals puts it pretty close to the hood. Thats the only thing I can think of that your mechanic would be concerned with.

If it turns your Jeep over ok, and the terminals aren't hitting the hood, and it's tightened down on the battery tray so it doesn't move, it's fine.

Sounds like someone trying to sell you a new battery.

get the biggest dang battery you can cram into the tray.

Hey everyone...thanks for the info. Not to sound like a total noobie (but I am), but what exactly did you mean when you said "12V"? Is there something I need to know? (Clearly there is...and I don't know it.)

Like in 12 volts. There is a little spacer in the back of the tray that will come out to accept a larger battery. I like stuffing the biggest battery in a vehicle as I get to fit. Along with new cables.

yours is 12 volt..as said above, what you have is cool..as also said above,I like the biggest battery with the most cranking amps that I can fit..and again,as said above, you have a mechanic probably trying to just get your money.I would fire him
