Beartown Site, Wager Gulch & Carson City Ghost Town
I carry 27 gallons but I think I used about 19 gallons to drive from Silverton around this loop and back to Silverton.
I did this trip twice. (not counting the time I knew I didn't have enough gas and turned around)
Once I did it with a 15 gallon tank and ran out of gas on Stony Pass. I put in my spare gas to get back to Silverton.
Second time is what I described in this thread. I had a 21 gallon tank now. I did not wait to run out of gas. I added my spare gas when my gauge was on empty but with my new oversized tank my gauge is not very accurate. I am thinking about getting a programmable fuel gauge such as Auto Meter 3810.

Very accurate but expensive. I don't like running out of gas in the mountains so it may be worth it to know just how much gas I have.

Busa, do you have to get a new sending unit or does it work with the stock pick-up?
It would be nice to have a gauge that was atturate.

Any sending unit will work - Jeep, Ford, Chevy. High resistance when empty. Low resistance when full. Or vice versa.

After installing it you bring a can of gas and run out of gas on purpose. Then press a button to calibrate the gauge to say empty.
Fill up with gas and press the button again until it says full.
That's it. You will now know exactly how much gas you have.

Autometer has several of these fuel gauges that can be calibrated. Most cost $124. But I found this one for $108 Auto Meter Full Sweep Electric GS Series Fuel Level Gauge - P/N: 3810

If you don't like the black faced one I posted check out the Autometer site. Auto Meter

Here is the GPS route of my trip. Red is my path. The yellow line is the Continental Divide. I have seen conflicting maps regarding the Continental Divide. Some maps show Stony Pass being on the Continental Divide but the Gunnison River (by the words "Alpine Loop") flows east then north then to the Colorado river that flows west. That means the yellow line on this map must be the real Continental Divide. Either way this whole area is very rough and mountainous. The only 2 gas stations on the map are in Silverton. Ouray is north-west of the map. Lake City is north-east of the map.
