As the title hints, I am looking for some info on the best fuel pump to go back into my jeep with. I am not 100% sure that it is bad, but I have replaced everything involved from there back and added an in-line fuel filter, cleaned the carb (weber 2 barrel) and it has started dying on me at stops (i.e. when stopping at a stop sign, stopping to look at animals on the ranch, parking) it also dies when I am slowing down, but I down shift and it fires back up. Help with the initial question (what is the best fuel pump for my baby?) and any info on what might be causing this problem. Also, it seemed as though this problem began with the addition of my fuel filter between pump and carb. I have checked the filter and it is clean. It did it right before I added the filter but the filter in my carb was all gunked up thought that was the cause of that so had gas tank cleaned and added fuel filter and cleaned the carb. also added a new sending unit. (sigh)(help)(please)(thanks):bang:

here is a picture of the current fuel pump

I have always had good luck with napa parts..

Another thing that can cause a fuel pump to go dry would be an inoperative fuel tank vent system. This can be checked easily by after making a drive and after using up a bit of gas, would be to remove the fuel filler cap, if you hear air rushing in, that would be an indicator of something wrong. Also there might be a blockage or kink in the fuel line somewhere or even a cracked fuel line somewhere between the tank and pump. I doesn't look like the pump is all that old either. Anyway, I tend to go to N.A.P.A. for quality parts, but I am sure it is always a gamble.

You wrote that you cleaned the carburator, how well or completely did you clean it? Honestly it sounds like either a blocked idle jet or your float needs to be reset. Some older floats also become "Gas" logged (water logged). They need to be replaced. But they tend to over flow ... never mind.

I was working on it at lunch today and noticed the at the fuel pump has a leak. The location of the leak is indicated by the green line inside the red circle. I guess it needs to be replaced. Does this fuel pump look like what had originally been put on the jeep. I believe this one replaced the original but I have found 2 different types of fuel pump that supposedly go to this motor.

I cleaned it with an old tooth brush but to what degree I can not tell you. I got it cleaner than it was and it seemed to run better but that was a while back. I did clean the jets pretty good.

The leaking pump seems like a promising answer to your problem.

is the bottom of the pump against the motor mount or is that just the way the pic makes it look ??

That is just the picture. There is nothing touching the pump.

cool..I bet a new fuel pump will have you back in business..I would still check that filter in the carb ever so often.I have had them get trash in them even with an inline filter before them

Good to know I will keep an eye on it

This might not be the case with your engine. I have a 360 that was pulled from a Wagoneer. It is my habbit to automaticly replace the fuel pump and water pump on an engine that sits dry for any period of time. Fule pumps for the 360 come in a few configurations, top feed and bottom feed being the main differances, but there is another, some are smaller in diameter than others. If I were you I'd remove the pump and bring it in the parts place. Before plunking down the hard earned money compare the new and old paying attention to things like size. My 360 worked out better with the smaller pump.

I picked up my new correct fuel pump from napa this morning and I an waiting on my granddad to get back home so we can spends time together and put that pump in. this should fix a lot of my problems I hope. (fingers crossed)
