best replacement 2 barrel for 258

Can someon tell me which is the best replacement carb ,I have the original carter single ehaust ,I am keeping the stock manifold for now it is an original 2 barrel with all of the smog stuff that i have been tearing out,No smog needed in Florida. i Have been reading about the Motorcraft 2100 and the Weber

You can't beat the simplicity and reliability of the 2100, parts can be had anywhere and you can literally rebuild em on the side of the road should the need ever arise. Plus they run damn near upside down, and you will most definately get better performance. A mc2100 stamped with 1.08 on the fuel bowl is very near perfectly matched to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

I got an mc2150 from a pic-a-part yard for $40 and rebuilt it. I got the manifold adapter, a rebuild kit and a gallon of carburetor cleaner for less than $100. I have less than $AMC 150 invested and my jeep runs great. Just make sure you get the carb with the 1.08 venturi stamp on the side if you go this route. Some guys buy the setup from the fella on Ebay, but his kit is over $300. I think. The mc2100 or 2150 is really easy to rebuild and simple to tune. Good luck

If you go up to the top right of the page to the "Google site search" and key in MC 2100 you will have enough to keep you reading for the evening. there is some pretty good stuff in there. About half of the threads will be comparing the 2100 to the Weber.


I like the idea of going to a grave yard and finding a suitable carb (MC2100) and doing a rebuild kit and having a very acceptable carb for less than $100. And I built it.

, I ordered The Motorcraft 2100 from the guy in Colorado ,I didnt have time to go to the Junkyard , The guy at morris jeep was trying to tell me to never buy a used carb , He said the Weber is way easier to tune , I thought I would listen to the guys that know best and thats You guys , Thanks

Webbers are great carbs, but for the simplicity and low cost, you can't beat an MC2100. O'Reilly sells a rebuild kit for only $12. I have less than $50 total in mine including new jets, kit, and carb cleaner, and I've never had any problems with it what so ever.

One other reason to choose the MC2100 over the Webber is a Webber also requires a fuel regulator. With the 2100, just hook a line to your mechanical fuel pump and have a nice day!


If jetted correctly, gas mileage should be equal between the two.

Carter actually makes some really nice carbs. It's just the ones they made for factory CJ's seem to be the red headed step child of the family. They work great when new, but a lot of people tend to have issues with them when they get older and they try to rebuild them.

The Motorcraft 2100 and 2150 on the other hand are so simple(similar to a Holley), a caveman could rebuild them and make them run right.

are they available new at the APS? Are they smog compatible? mine is a 76' so im stuck with all the tubes and hoses.

Most parts stores will sell you a rebuilt one, but it'll cost a lot more than buying a junkyard one and doing the simple rebuild. Also keep in mind you'll need an adapter to bolt it to your intake. As far as smog, I have no idea. I'd bet you could buy a few T fittings and hook all the vacuum hoses up and get by, but don't quote me on that.

These 2150's were used on Ford engines up to the 302 Windsor in cubic displacement.

Ford engines commonly equipped with the 1.08 venturi 2150:

1975-1986 2.8L V6
1982-1983 3.8L Essex V6
1973-1983 250 cu in (4.1 L) I6
1973-1983 302 cu in (4.9 L) Windsor
The last Ford vehicles to leave the factory with 2150 carburetors were 1986 Aerostars equipped with the 2.8L V6.
