I'm an IT nerd, not a mechanic (not even a good shade tree mechanic). But I love my jeeps. I have 79 CJ7 and a 2000 YJ. I'm reasonably competent with light to moderate fixes, but my skills of diagnosis are weak. I finally was able to realize the distintion between those two skills and moved on by letting a mechanic (who has proven to be one of those mechanics you can fully trust) go to work on my big problem.
Since I got the CJ two years ago, it's had a horrible vibration when stressing the engine. After going through all the things I thought might be the problem, I figured it must be the Transmission and took it in. It was simply the u joints (which I had checked but didn't check properly). I drove my jeep home tonight with the satisfaction I've been wanting for two years.
Now I'm frustrated by the 15 degree weather because I can't wait to get back out and tinker.
