Hey guys my '76 CJ5 has the gas filler indents and other grooves and such around the body. I'm wondering when they quit producing these body types. Also what was the wedge shaped indent for near the top edge of the body by the back seat?

I'm asking this because I've been surfing around and noticed some old cj's that have smooth sides.

Thanks.

another body change to help identify the year is the gas tank. Check out this link:

Also the military M38a1 had a notch in the hood. This was to accommodate a snorkel. That notch was also on civilian CJ5s through 1972. In 1972 the hood was lengthened to accommodate the strait 6. The notch has blocked from the factory.

I don't think they ever stopped putting the drivers side tank indentation.
I believe all CJ's have it except some fiberglass tubs.

ken98k,
With one minor edit I agree with what you have to say.

Well I got the reference above about the notch being a holdover from the m38a1, but what was it for?

I've been told my '76 may not be correct because of the drop style tailgate and indentations but I'm beginning to think it is right. Any opinions? Can't post pics with my phone, sorry.

It was for the top. Did you check out ken98k's link? Here is what Jeepy said about it:
Old style top bows. Left-over from earlier models. I believe it was an M38A1 thing.

Oh ok thank you guys.

You're right!
All cj5's had the drivers side tank indentation except some with fiberglass tubs.
