Taking off bell housing because needs to be replaced but cant get to top two bolts. Any suggestions?

Go in from the top inside the engine compartment.

You might have to lower the engine at the rear. Using a socket that has its own universal joint on it could help also.

What he said ................put a piece of 3/4" plywood under the pan and use a small hydraulic jack and let the motor drop a little...........

:D:D:D:D

U-joint socket and a long extension. is what works for me.

I agree with all of the above. support the back of the engine along with the back of the Transfer Case . Remove the cross member and remove it from the Transfer Case . Lower the Transfer Case and the back of the engine. You won't be able to do both perfectly, the idea is to make room, but not bind the joint between the bell housing and the Transmission . You want those bolts to come out easily with no bind. From your second picture, the one taken from inside the engine compartment I could get to the bolts from there. The bolts are at ~10:00 and ~2:00, have faith and dirty arms & hands you'll get it done.

Also as Grits said, a long extension will get you there from under the jeep. I've done it both ways, getting them out isn't the tricky part, it's getting them back in that always worried me. Then I discovered that I can get to them from the top, but come to think of it I always remove the fenders for work like this. Removing the fenders probably seems drastic to you right now, but once you've done it a time or two it is quick and easy, also it makes life under the hood so much easier.

Always a good plan, get tired or frustrated or any combination of the two and bad things can happen. Worse things can happen if your break includes a few beers, wobbly pops can get in the way of the best laid plans. It's a nice cool day down here, I hope your getting some of this cool.

I have pulled many, many engines over the years. The easiest way for me to do this is to lower the Transmission from the frame just enough to get a very long extension(s) snaked up over the Transmission and under the floor to reach the bolt. Might even require a swivel, but not always.
The trick to putting them back in is to start them before you raise the Transmission back into place using the same technique.

Another trick is to use a couple bolts longer then the bolts at the (roughly) 3:00 and 9:00 positions with the heads cut off to guide the bellhousing into place when re-installing.

Thanks for all the help guys, still wasnt able to get to them this weekend. Hopefully buddy from work will be able to help me get to them some time this week. I have the tranny lowered a bit, but still not enough room to get it from under. Ugghhh, thinking about getting rid of my CJ now... haha..

You're getting a great experience ( frustrating too) learning all about your Jeep. Take lots of pics of everything before tearing something apart as a reference to help with reassembly.

I hear he finally found the right combination of tools and was able to remove the bell housing. The real fun can start with another bellhousing and a few new parts.

Hope he doesn't loose the dowel rings.

They are at 9:00 & 3:00, the larger bolts go through them. I call them indexing pins, they more like a ring though. When you come down to Tucson this weekend I'll show you what he's talking about. They are relatively small and easily over looked but important. Don't sweat it thy are probably there. Even though I did lose one when I put in the 360 (mine was left in the engine that was sold the day before installing the 360), a replacement was easy enough to find, easy enough that I can't remember where I got my replacement.

Ok, cool. Still planning on heading down there tomorrow. Just need to confirm my ex-wife dropping off my kids at my job, so that I can head straight there.
