82 scrambler with a 304 and Borg Warner t4. Stock differential and Dana 20 transfer case
I have a scrambler with a AMC 304 and a 4 speed. I discovered the Transmission is a Borg Warner T-4 . Lately I’ve been having problems getting the car in all 4 gears. This typically happens when the car has been driven for a while or when it has just started and is cold. My mechanic told me to change the Transmission fluid but I don’t have the slightest clue of what kind of fluid to put in it. Does anyone have any suggestions to put in it?

You will likely get a handful of different answers for the T-4 /5's, but Synchromesh was the one that cleared up hard shifting and mild grinding issues for me when I ran a T-5 .

Another thing you will likely hear is the the V8 is too much for the T-4 to handle since it is a light duty Transmission ,which may well be true, but it's ultimate life span depends greatly on how you drive and use yours.

There was discussion about this awhile back. TSM called for ATF Dextron but was changed to a MT grade 75-90 gear oil. Search borg warner T-4 fluid or oil for that thread.
