Have a 75 CJ5 with straight 6. Needing to add brake fluid and wasn't sure if there is a special brand that I need to purchase. Thank you all for your input.

Dot 3 is all you need, least expensive, and factory recommended.

Good time to flush the system. I flush mine every 2 years.

Remove most of the brake fluid from the MC without emptying it
Add new fluid to MC fill line
Bleed brakes until clear
Start with the passenger side rear
Move to the driver side rear
Front passenger side
Front driver side
You can use a self vacuum bleeder or enlist a helper
You can find videos on the internet concerning bleeding brakes if need be
Easy job
Hope this helps

DOT 3 is nasty stuff, I have gone to DOT 5 which is the synthedic equivalent with all the right properties and non of the bad. Doesn't attract water and doesn't destroy paint. ...... Hmmmmm just did some additional research and I can no longer advocate for the use of DOT5.

I switched to full silicone race fluid (DOT5) about 15 years ago...I have not run anything else since. I have the original hard brake lines, original Russell brake lines and original calipers and rear cylinders still installed and still working in 2 vehicles. AND I HAVEN"T CHANGED FLUID YET!

Yes, it costs more. But it has more than paid me back. I HAVE replaced brake pads and shoes and assorted steel spring parts...but nothing that touches the fluid has gone out yet! :chug: However, you can't use it with ABS systems

I used to get rust pits in the bottom of the wheel cylinders, calipers and MC. Switched to DOT 5 and no more problems. :D

Yes, I like DOT 5 but just read that it isn't right for some applications and had to publicly back off general use. DOT5 binds in a different way with contaminants.

Yes, I've read that it's not for ABS equipped cars...was your article any different? I haven't discovered why manufacturers don't want it in ABS systems though...

The article focused on the way DOT5 does not absorb water and sort of clings to contaminants making a gooey sludge that plugs up orifices. Yearly flushing will minimize the chances of this causing a problem, but lets be honist how often do we flush out our brake systems.
