Brake Light Switch

Brake Light Switch
pulling the seat seems like it would be better than growing another elbow.
:D

Thanks to all of the ideas you guys provided, I was able to adjust the brake light switch today. However, I had one piece of advice for others needed to do this....REMOVE the driver's seat FIRST. It makes the job much easier!

...Well, maybe a little easier...Oh, and then there's the ribbing you have to take if anybody sees you lying in Jeep with your feet on the back seat and you head under the dash..."You asleep under there!??"

there is a fine line between moving the switch enough to make it work correctly and not having any brake lights at all. this switch comes makes contact or closes the circuit when there is a gap between it and the pedal. the upper part of the pedal is designed to move the same way as the bottom, towards the firewall. if the switch is adjusted forward it will remain open, or off and you will never have brake lights never close. if it moved backward it will remain closed, or on, and the brakes will never shut off. its in the way brake lights have to respond to even the lightest pressure. if i am wrong i'd like to know. i took off the dash and played with it for quite a while. then i removed the switch and discovered this backward off-on configuration.

im 6 foot 4 and have a CJ5 . my legs would be hanging over the tailgate:D

I know this is a little old but I found it having to change my switch. The tip to take the seat out was a good one especially since my door opening is 4ft off the ground and being in a Scrambler with a bulk head and half cab it was tight (I'm 6'3 and 235).

Mine had a little clip in it instead of the nuts but it simply was no longer holding it. Also, I took the little plastic wiring tray out and that made all the difference in the world being able to push everything out of the way, with that out it wasnt too bad.

please take a minute and fill out your profile. Tell us all about your rig and it makes us look smarter when you ask us questions or we need to know something you may know.:D

Its in my signature right up there ;). Oh yeah, down there too.

And the voice in my head has never screamed like a little girl. Am I broken...lol?

never screamed?? maybe you need to try harder?:D

Screamed, sure... Like a little girl? Nope...lol.

I filled out my profile more though, that should make you happy ;).
Well you attracted my attention... Doesn't make me happy. I asked that your profile be filled out when you joined. You haven't.

A sig can be turned off (I have them turned off so I can monitor the site from my phone more easily).

All I know is that you have a "1982 CJ8 Scrambler, kinda not stock any more..."

Why the difficulty?

Wow really?

And I've never been beat up over not filling out a profile before. I ask you "why the difficulty"?

I wont bother any more... Yeah I could go on and really speak my mind but what would the point be? I simply found an old thread from a google search and replied to it wanting to note that the guy that said take the seat out made a good suggestion. And I get hassled about the stupid profile... Good Luck to all :).

Sorry to see you go, I'm sure you have some great insight an experience wit a CJ.

But, you have chosen to leave - that is your choice.

this may help

I think that is the picture I need, too. But it's gone now.

This is why attached pictures are better than linking. Someone always decides they don't need to host a picture anymore, and now any thread that has the link suffers... :(

your right , not very sociable is it. What are you having trouble with?

I have replaced that PITA switch with a pressure switch mounted next to the master cylinder but let me know what you need to see and I will try to find a picture.

I'm putting a new harness in my old Jeep. The wiring was shot when I got it. The brake light switch behind the pedal is just hanging there and I can't even see how it should attach to see if it will be a working system.

It's a 74 CJ5 , all drums. I can find lots of images on Google of the switch itself, but nothing with a clear picture of it in position.

I'll do some more research on the pressure switch replacement, too.

I am sorry I can not find the picture, I think I have been through at least one hard drive since then. I am also sorry if you are unable to experience the process of inserting, adjusting and wiring that little switch. I think everybody should have a mental picture of what the true meaning of the word "frustration" is.

I hope you find what you are looking for but I for one will never even think of deliberately re installing one of those silly things. the pressure switch is , until proven otherwise, the only way to go.
