Is it normal for the breather on the back of the valve cover to spit oil? Mine spits and dribbles oil onto the valve cover and down the back of the engine. It seems a little excessive to me. I just cleaned it off last week.
I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l on my CJ7 .

Blow by.
Need to have a leak-down test done to the engine.
LG

I’d agree with blowby being the main culprit.
You could reroute the pcv to the rear port and breather to the front for easier clean up.

Get a cylinder pressure test kit if you don’t already have one. Pull ignition wire from distributor and crank engine in cold state on each cylinder.
Sometimes the rings are just carboned up. A sea foam treatment on the upper end by spraying into throttle body until stall and/or pouring through plug holes and let sit over night or longer then crank with plugs removed. I’d do an oil change afterward.

Check your PCV valve too. Pull it out and shake it. If it rattles then it's good. If it doesn't rattle, buy a new one.

Pull the breather out of the valve cover.
Look into the hole; is there a baffle to keep oil away from the breather ?

Stock valve covers usually have a baffle in there to keep most of the oil inside, most aftermarket covers do not that i have seen, but it's been a while.

Yes, there is a baffle. I have the stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l cover on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . My guess is that LG is right and it is engine blow-by. I am probably going to have to get a leak-down tester myself as my local shop looked at me like I was stupid when I asked about it; they kept thinking I was talking about a compression test. German mechanics automatically assume everyone is a mechanical moron in the first place and I regularly surprise them by actually knowing what the hell I am talking about and calling them when they try to rip me off. The joys of owning a Jeep in Germany are endless.

I actually have zero clue how many miles my engine has on it. My odometer read 10000 km when I got the Jeep and it only goes to 99,999. Who knows how many times, if any, that it has rolled over. I put 12,000km on it in my first year so if I guess 10,000 per year that puts me at right around 370,000-380,000km or 200,000 plus miles. I know zip about how this vehicle was driven or stored before I got it at auction where it had been sitting for almost 5 months before I bought it. Everything about this CJ has been an adventure.

Here's a link with a picture (if it opens ;) ) of what I installed on mine. I mounted it at the rear close to the breather opening on the valve cover. It separates the oil and vapors. Vapor hose goes to air intake tube and oil drain hose I ran down to fuel pump block off plate after I drilled and tapped it with a barbed fitting. No more mess, and much faster and cheaper than going through the engine ;)

You put that on your AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ? Do you have pics of your setup as well, that might be the solution to my problem.

Lets see if the pictures come through ok

Woooohoooo, now all I need is a dancing bear ;)

So, if I am looking at the pics right the lower large hose is the oil drain and the upper large is the vapor hose while the smaller hose on the bottom of the unit is connected to the breather hole on the valve cover through a grommet. Am I getting that correctly?

The two larger hoses are inlet from valve cover and outlet to air intake. Here's another pic. Smaller hose at bottom is the drain back to block.

Hmm, interesting setup. That will bear some thinking. I may end up going this route but I am going to try and find a shop that can do a leak test and compression test first. I want to make sure I don't have internal issues that will bite me later.

Mine isnt my #1 DD (sadly she's #3 or 4 on the list) and runs like a scalded ape still, so the oil separator was the way to combat the blow-by. Here in Ca I cant legally run a breather vent like you have and that hose must go to the air intake to pass emissions testing. Not to mention, the oil separator was much cheaper and quicker than tearing down the engine to solve blow-by issues
