I have a question to throw at anyone who is willing to listen. I have an opportunity to purchase a 78 Chevy 1/2 ton that has a fairly recent 350 in it. This would just be a parts truck, and would give me the motor I am looking for. It also would have the 12 bolt rear, and Dana 44 front that is matched, although I do not know the gear ratio right nowm but I do know they are matched. I could then sell anything else on the truck that is salvageable, and make the money back that was spent on it.

My question is on the axles. I already have a Dana 44 that needs to be converted to the 5x5.5 lug to match the 9 inch I have. I know the 44 has 4:10 gears, but I do not know the 9 in ratio. Would it be smarter to get rid of what I have now and go with the matched set? How much would the 12 bolt/44 combo be worth if I were to purchase that separately? I am looking at the strength of the 12 bolt versus the 9 inch also. Let me know your thoughts.

IMO... Stick with the 9" you can go to 35 spline axles with it, if need be.
There's just way more aftermarket support for the 9". And 3rd members are just so cool.
The front 44 should get you a couple hundred if it doesn't need rebuilt.
Around here you might get 50 bucks for the 12"

I'd use the entire drivetrain from the Chevy in your Jeep. You know everything will work together and you won't have to mix and match.
Not sure about lengths and weather you want full size widths under your Jeep.
I met a guy that owns a machine shop that is doing that to his Jeep right now. It also has a 12 bolt and 44 front.

Just looked around some to compare the 2.

Ford 9"
stock axles will be either 28 or 31 spline.
The pinion will be 28 spline with a dia. of 1.313"
You can up grade to 40 spline axles
The big pinion is 35 spline and 1.876 dia.

chevy 12 bolt
it's harder to find info but heres what I found
stock axles are 30 spline and up grade to 33 spline.
The stock pinion is 30 spline and 1.438 dia.

as always this info is worth exactly what you paid for it.:chug:

MylittleCJ5 is thinking what I was thinging, about the ease of doing it. Plus, I could have it on the road faster. I don't plan to use the whole drivetrain, as it is an auto, and I want a stick, but the axles match. I could hold onto the 9 inch, and get rid of the extra 44 I have, and build the 9" later on to replace the 12 bolt.

Another thought, which TC is better, the Dana 300 ot the NP205?

Nine inch also uses outside axle retainers.
