What oil is everyone running in there AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ? I want to make sure I have a good oil for the break in period. And any tricks that you know would be appreciated.Other than that its just me and chilton.....Head is already off and i'm down to the timing chain now. Thanks !!

Lucas makes a high zinc oil that I hear is good for break in.. Never used it though. They should come out pretty easy. Make sure not to gouge your cam bearings on the way in and out. nice and easy, patiences and no forcing.

Thanks jimbos I will look into that and I will definitely take it easy.a new learning experience! I will let you know how it goes.

If the cam doesn't come with it I would add some cam break in lube. And as Jimbo said always use a high zinc oil with a flat tappet cam.

I just recently finished the top half of my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l a few months ago. I use Brad Penn 10W-30 synthetic blend with COMP break in oil additive.

thanks elwood!! just what i was looking for!!someone told me to pre soak the lifters in a tub of oil? did they mean assembly lube? and what did you do to "prime" the motor before you started it.Did you crank by hand till oil came up top or do i just go with it?

No problem  I had read about pre-soaking the lifters too, and someone told me "do you think they do that from the factory?" That made sense to me, so I did not soak mine.

I did coat everything with assembly lube, everything. There is no such thing as too much assembly lube. It's all going to thin out in the engine oil anyway :chug:

Don't forget to follow your engine components specifications for break-in, I know my COMP cam and valve train components had specific instructions for break-in.

So, are you upgrading, or just replacing stock?

just stock, but i kinda ran into a problem, wheni put the timing chain and gear back on,and its all lined up ok,I can't get the oil slinger on the key. It is suppose to be on the key isnt it? or does it just ride in the groove on the shaft? i do have the gear up as far as it will go and it should just ride on thevery end if i'm not mistaken. Its messin with me!!!!!! help!

okay i think i answered my own question, the slinger rides in the groove,it has the key way in it to get over the key for the crankshaft pulley???? I took picture as i took it apart but can't see it that well.Hopefully someone will see this and square me away.92 in the garage today.........i'm startin to see mirages...hahahaha

Yes, you are correct, here's the only picture I could find out of all of the books in my garage.

elwood, does the crankshaft slinger just ride on that groove or does it have that key way for a reason? I dont really remember? :chug::chug:
