When I engage the 4wd I can't tell if it's in 4 hi or 4 low. Does this year CJ7 only have one 4wd setting. I can only get the 4wd shifter in 2wd neutral and 4wd. When I pull the lever back it's in 2wd then I push it forward into neutral and then I push it a little farther forward and it goes into 4wd. Is there anything I'm missing? Thx

What year is your cj? I know mine was and still is missing the shifter. I do have the shift pattern emblem but no knob. Never heard of only one 4wd selection. Again, on mine PO installed a big ole body lift which makes it very difficult to shift into both high and low. Basically the shifter bottoms put against the floor opening. I almost have to put my foot up on it and shove:eek:. Haven't broke it yet but would make a great time to double stick it and remove the body for suspension. Have you tried shifting while the jeep is off? Some of these folks will enlighten you shortly.

You should have the Dana 300 which is a nice Transfer Case to have, maybe just frozen from lack of use, mud built up on shifter rails? When I took mine apart for the rebuild the shifter rails were filthy. maybe a good time for a fluid change to :chug:

You should be able to easily tell if its in high or low gear.. Put it in 2wd drive it a few hundred feet or around the block. listen to the motor. Then shift it into 4wd. SHould be low. The motor should be running alot higher RPMs to make the same drive around the block. Only different you should feel between 2wd and 4 hi is the front end pulling. may feel weird in your steering also.

My 85 is difficult to get into 4 high as well. Fortunately, the dash light still works to let me know.

Now for a Hijack question.

My Wheel Locks are worn to the point that I cannot read them. To lock the front hubs, do I turn clockwise or counter? Thanks!

This afternoon, when I left for work, I threw mine in 4 High. And I don't know if this is right as this is my first true 4WD, BUT, I found it slid into 4 High while I was in 1st gear and tickling the clutch a little. I could feel it slide right into 4 High and drove a bit with it on.

I also tried it in 4 Low, and it was the same way. (Mine is obviously a Standard Shift) Put the Transmission in 1st, tickled out the clutch while pushing the 4WD Lever into position. Slid right in.

I'm obviously a Noob, so there could be a better (Correct) way, but that seemed to work for me.

Also, I used a little scotchbright to clean up my hubs and found the "2" and "4".

Hope this helps. :chug:

CLEAN UP your linkage on the 300. Also I have found when shifting into 4WD (HI or LO) a little forward motion helps while pushing the shifter in the direction you want to go. I twin sticked my Dana 300 and its ALOT easer now

Second that, I have always found that putting tranny in neutral and then stopping from a roll helps shifting the Transfer Case . Had times in many 4x4s that wouldn't shift into gear would with the rocking motion. A proper cleaning would help as mentioned

Clockwise to lock, counter clockwise to free.

Good ol' mechanical gears, no solenoid, no computer, no syncro's, no nothin' between you and your Transfer Case . If your having difficulty engaging the Transfer Case nothin' helps more than a litle rock and maybe some roll with the clutch. As long as the gears don't grind, all is good.

When I had my '81 CJ5 my Dana 300 was a wonderful Transfer Case . The thing would slip into gear with ease. You conldn't do this when shifting down, but you could shift from low to high while on the move. Found this out in a "Can't stop now!" deep snow situation way up on a high mountain top in Eastern Arizona. I never found a reason to complain about a Dana 300 .
