Hello everyone. I am new to Jeep Forum after recently purchasing a 1986 CJ7 with the AMC 150 2.5L engine. Runs good at idle and low speed. Runs good at high RPM, but sputters when accelerating up to the higher rpm. I added some non-ethanol 90 octane fuel but no change. I'm thinking carb but I am no mechanic. Looks like a lot of lines have been taken off on this carb and plugged. (See picture.) I'm wondering if this is having a negative effect on performance. Also there is a wire coming off the back of the carb that is not connected to anything. What the heck? Emission control stuff, I assume? Can any carb gurus look at this picture and tell me if there are any lines plugged that are "essential" to fix this problem? The carb says it's "Manufactured by Carter for Motorcraft". Would I be better off to pull it and install a Weber carb like I keep reading about? I cannot tune a carb so if that's necessary to run the Weber I need to stay stock. (Also can I get an aluminum valve cover for this engine and where? Broke the plastic one pulling it last night.) Thanks in advance everyone.
