carter 1bbl issues

I have a 78 CJ5 with a stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , I noticed when I pulled the plug off the carb vacuum port that gas came out of it. I have no idea why or how, it is a reman carb and I have now idea how old it is. Can anyone tell me what would cause this and if I should rebuild it or replace it. The picture shows the carb from the passenger side and its the port to the right of the mounting stud that I discovered the gas coming out of thanks for any help. Also would that cause the engine to run rich? I'm a little carb stupid so bare with me.

Have you checked your float height?

Possibly a bad needle and seat?

Does it run OK?

It runs rich, I can't seem to fix that. Other than that it runs fine. I have not checked the float height yet

Wouldn't be the first reman carb that had problems out of the box.

Is it necessary to rebiuld the carb or can I just check and fix the float if needed? And also is it easier to just remove the carb or can I check the float leaving the carb on? Thanks for the help.

Also I notice that if It sits for more than a day it doesn't want to start right up, it takes a few minutes. Could that have something to do with the carb?

I think answers and comments here are correct...check float level and needle and seat. sounds like the fuel bowl is draining down so its empty when you try to start it. Get that? I'm not familiar with this carb but sound like a pretty basic problem...

Probably due to gas leaking out or evaporating. Carbs do need an overhaul every now and then also. Carb needle & seats wear out and need replacing, Dirt clogs up stuff and collects in the bottom of the float bowl, accelerator pumps and floats leak, things get out of adjustmentand, gaskets start to leak, and of course people modify them.

that is manifold vacuum port. I am trying to understand how it can puddle up enough in the manifold to drip from the port.

I'd like to know too since I think that is what I found when I pulled mine off to make sure there wasn't any cracks or leaks in the plug. I think I'm in the same boat. My carter carb is old and likely hasn't been rebuilt in many years.

just rebuild it man, kit from autozone is like 20 bucks and takes a few hours and a couple cans of carb cleaner and a toothbrush.
